So true. I originally started with a single U6 Lite and messed around adding Network to an existing Pi. I quickly bought a second U6 Lite for better coverage. The existing router crashed a couple of times leading me to buy the UDR with its built in AP, relocate one of the U6's for coverage in the garden and garage. In Network I didn't like that the U6s were sometimes showing the wrong parent and that the topology diagram was flat (due to the non Unifi switches)... So I recently got a USW Lite 16 to replace a perfectly adequate 16 port TP Link switch. I'm now looking at replacing my other switches with Unifi, unnecessarily rerouting a few connections, replacing the UDR with a UDR 7 and possibly looking at the U7 APs. Unfortunately when it comes to tech I don't seem able to resist spending money on cool, nerdy stuff. Now when's that C-9 Turbo coming....
That ia a good option. My big concern with the UX line is many that have jumped on the original UX have been left without updates. Maybe that is fixes with the UX7 having more robust hardware, but still a concern.
The thing is I already have the cloud gateway Ultra for him and so I just want to add an AP to that. I think right now the U6-Mesh or U7-Mesh, if it becomes available in time, are the best bets. My son and his wife aren't going to miss 6G at all.
You could do the ux7 and set it up as a AP under the Ultra. That is a function of the UX series. It would probably look better then the other U7 products that are avaliable right now.
Ah, wasn't aware it had that capability designed in. Misunderstood @JB10's suggestion. Interesting.
Are any of you using 6ghz having success getting the signal through walls to cover multiple rooms with an AP?
Several times I've come across comments about it not getting through walls very well...
I think this all depends on the size of the house and contruction materials. I had read allot of those comments as well and frankly in my case they don't seem to be applicable. My phone stays on 6ghz no matter were I am. In my case though my house uses a open floorplan wood frame home with really only the bedrooms being enclosed from the main common open space. When i look at the wifiman signals my 6ghz bad shows a slightly better signal then my 5ghz band surprisingly. As per suggestions all over the ui community I reduced the transmit power for 2.4ghz as low as i could and then adjusted 5ghz to a value of 7 above the 2.4ghz radio. The 6ghz is just one value above that.
Now ofcourse the speed has dropped down a bit thougj.
I am very suprised at the 6ghz band as it seems to work pretty well in my case atleast.
OK...I think I've narrowed it down to:
U7-Mesh: If it appears magically in time (which would be March-ish). Not holding my breath, but if it showed likely choose this first.
U7-Outdoor: Very powerful, he could run this at lower power settings and still get all the coverage he needs, and gives him an outdoor option in the future if he wants to put it outside and add a different AP to the house.
U6-Mesh: Great symmetrical coverage from one AP that would cover his current house (inside and outside), very easy on the eyes so WAF higher and thus more placement options/opportunities.
Decided not to worry too much about 6g...any of above will serve him well, give him good coverage, security, etc. If the U7-Mesh appeared and did have 6g would be a bonus, but not making 6g a choice point.
That's my decision and I'm sticking to it.
Until the next post here. ![]()
I'm wondering if this form factor is even possible with the tri-radios.
The U6 Mesh is essentially a U6 Pro, but in cylindrical form. Based on that, you'd think that Ubiquiti can turn a U7 Pro into a U7 Mesh. The concern would be heat. The current U6 Mesh and the previous cylinder mesh AP model (forget the exact name at the moment) both run hot, I suppose they can make the device a bit bigger and perhaps add cooling vents, if need be.
Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
The U7 pro gear already has a fan and runs pretty warm as it is. So if the basic design is already warm with the older gen stuff heat would likely be an issue.
I would assume with some modifications it should be possible. Several of the consumer mesh WiFi 7 systems have a similar cylindrical design. Some added cooling would be definitely be beneficial.
The new U7 XG gear is shipping w/out a fan, using heat-sink base to manage cooling. U7-Pro XG 5g is 2x2 rather than 4x4 as on the others...maybe it would be the one to be morphed to a U7-Mesh?
I would hope not. I would pass on it at that point.
I've intentionally stayed away from the ap's with fans.
You have my vote on that also. AP's should be sealed up tight to prevent dust and other build up on components. We installed a bunch of AP's in schools and the outside of the AP's near the cafeteria are covered with a thin layer of dust and gunk imagine if that was pulled inside via fan.
I'm away from home at the moment using cloud connection, for some reason none of my wireguard VPN clients are showing up. The Wireguard server setup is still showing, but the VPN clients screen is empty... I do have functioning Wireguard clients, tested the one on my phone right now and it is working perfectly even though it doesn't show up on the client list.
Is it normal not to see VPN clients when connecting remotely?
I recently updated to a new version of the cloud gateway software, 4.1.22, so likely that is the culprit...
I think you might be looking in the wrong place, but just to clarify.
You have the WireGuard server running on your unifi gateway and you’re referring to clients for that server connection, right?
If so, you would tap on the server in your first screenshot, and then from that screen, tap on “clients.”
Your second screenshot looks like it’s the VPN client screen for when you want your unifi gateway to connect to another WireGuard server running elsewhere.
Oh wow, you're correct. The difference is in their mobile versus desktop UI confused me obviously!
Thanks for providing the necessary guidance... ![]()
So now that you corrected my navigation I can get to the right place to add a new wireguard client, I can create a new client, but it's failing to set up on my wife's phone via QR code scan or importing the conf file.
Both fail in the wireguard app for some reason for some reason. Vader message unable to import tunnel.
I made sure the Wireguard app was up to date and cleared data on it, and tried again and so I think was just something I have to wait till I'm at my computer to figure out.
So something's not quite right for me for some reason. Maybe something different in the new version of the Cloud Gateway software or a difference in creating new clients on the mobile app instead of laptop.
Make sure the conf filename doesn't any spaces. That tripped me up a few times.
