Thanks very much, I did have a dash in the name but no spaces. I'm going to try it again in a little while. I did try and import the conf file on my phone as well and it failed there too, so not just a issue with wife's phone
Trying a couple more times, removed any dashes from the name, and still not able to import our scan. I did get an actual error about an invalid name, but no helpful details, the name is just my wife's name with PH at the end of it no dashes so it's very bland.
Frustrating!
@jkudave IF someone was debating jumping into Unifi, and looking at the UX7 or the Dream Router 7, which would be your recommendation? Ill admit, im leaning doward the dream router 7 to get started, but the form factor is throing me off. Cant afford to jump right into one of the dream machines right now. I'm kicking my but and wishing Iwould have listened to @mavrrick58 a few weeks ago instead of being cheap.
Edit:
The other thing throwing me off is the coverage area. Listing says 1750', my house is about 2250.
It really depends on your needs. Do you see yourself needing the extra features of the DR7, such as Protect for cameras, or Talk for phones now or down the road? Many people use UniFi cameras, which requires the Protect app. If that’s your goal, the DR7 is the way to go. If you’re simply looking for a relatively inexpensive way to start with UniFi gear, without any bells and whistles so to speak, the UX7 will suit your needs without issue.
Why? Sit it on a desk, table, or stand somewhere and forget about it.
Whichever device you go with, you’ll need another AP in your house to cover that area.
Currently, No . But I can definetly see the need in the future.
Thats what got me here in the first place, and now its costing me more.
Oh I know its silly. and worse than that, its going to be in a closet with everything else. So it really doesnt matter, just a personality quirk.
Can those be wireless? Any you reccomend? The problem I have is there is no hardwire actually connected in this house. It's there, but litereally just laid accross the attic, not even dropped in the wall. No it is not old phone line. the house is only 4 years old. I have verified it is CAT6e cable. It is something I plan on addressing, but its likely a few months off yet.
I like the U6 Mesh, but just about any UniFi AP can be meshed wirelessly.
Looking at what they have, they may be able to mesh wirelessley, but they all need POE for power. Since I don't have ethernet back there, it doesnt make any sense to go this route until after I get the wiring done. If they had any that just used a regular adapter it wouldnt matter, but I didnt see anything like that unless I just missed it.
You can use a POE Injector just for power if you have power and no Ethernet. The UX7 in AP mode would be your traditional AC power option.
These come with an AC plug and PoE injector.
I would be careful about expecting to use the DR7 for protect. Video is storage intensive and the DR7 uses a micro SD card for storage. The DR7 would probably only be ok for the litest of uses for video storage.
Keep in mind when they say that it is also for overall coverage. You may need more then two for devices that need faster 5 and 6ghz wifi.
So let's say I have a friend who is thinking about cameras/Protect, and he has (coincidentally!) a UCG-Max.
What should my friend be looking for in an SSD drive for his gateway. Not sure exactly what type/model to look for, not much experience w/SSDs... I see NVMe, gen 4 & 5, M.2, and lots of other somewhat confusing identifiers.
Appreciate any pointers on what to avoid/what to prefer. For my friend. [cough] ![]()
Your friend probably needs to buy the needed tray if they add the ssd. UACC-SSD-Tray
I think it supports gen3 and 2 lanes so if you get a cheap gen3x4 it will still work.
As @jumpjump said if you didn't buy it with storage you will need to buy the NVME tray. Most likely any decent NVME drive will work fine, the question will be endurance. I am probably going to put a 4tb Crucial P3 Plus drive in mine when i finally get around to updating it. There have been reports that the Crucial P3 Plus drives work in it. I have a 512 GB drive right now
Having full continous video recording (CVR) is nice if you have the capacity. Unfortunately it is ruff on storage though. With Just a G4 Dorbell and a G4 Instant my retention isn't great. It is basically about 2 weeks. I have since backed off the G4 instant to only retaining event based stuff. Now I have about a month of retention
This made a difference recently where a friends Jeep was crashed into while parked out front. We caught it all on camera. Exporting it out and sending it to him was a piece of cake.
So just consider the number of cameras you expect to deploy when considering the size of the storage size you want. At least in my case a 2k camera needs about 500GB per month.
FWIW: I run a 24T Purple drive in my UDM Pro.
I am using the crucial m.2’s in two of our desktop machines and they perform very well. Plus they only use micron flash (of course) which have higher endurance over Samsung or Hynix.
Going big is also good, again to get the largest amount of lifetime write data size - the bigger the m.2, the more time between writing to the same location.
Thanks, I forgot to mention that I do have the tray, so that is covered.
I'm going to be doing this somewhat on the cheap as I won't have too many cameras on Protect, mainly will be using it for a few internal cameras that we want in the house for when were out of town. We had a small scare while we were on vacation a few weeks ago (neighbor thought someone had gone into our house, turned out it didn't happen) but not being able to see inside our house at all at that time was frustrating. If we're going to have indoor cams they need to be local, so Protect looks like the approach.
Thanks...I'll look that one up.
Good points/info on recording approach. I'm thinking more about having event based recording, along w/live view that should meet our needs for our use-case. As long as I can look at motion events, and also just take a look when I am concerned and want to see if anything is going on, that will cover my needs.
I've used a lot of Crucial stuff over the years and always liked that brand.
This looked like it might fit my needs, enough to have some room to play around in and seems plenty big for my intended use.
Not sure if I need/want the heat sink or not (with this or any drive). Is a heat-sink generally recommended?
My son is using this exact m.2 for his main drive in his desktop.
I have an older P5 and a P3 in my machine.
Re: heat sink. It will not fit in the UCG.
In our desktop machine where we are running PCIe Gen 4 x4 the controller on the m.2 can get warm am the inside of the pc gets hot as well so we are definitely using heat sinks. The flash chips themselves actually like to be a little warm.
But as mentioned, the UCG is only running PCIe Gen 3 x2 so they either decided they don’t need a heat sink or when you insert the tray, they may have an internal heat spreader.
