Not that I have any of these but thought the article may be of interest to some.
Home automation V1 used WEMO. They were wifi cloud based. No hub required! Seemed like a good idea 5 years ago. But I suffered google home integration failures weekly. WEMO did not respond error notifications. I did like their 3 way switch as it worked opposite a standard 3 way mechanical switch. They never offered a 3 way dimmer. Pulled it all out for my home automation V2 which is Hubitat (obvious here) with z-wave or zigbee.
WEMO likely to screw you.
Crap, first it's nest, now comes wemo...
I got the email two days ago from Belkin.
I got caught up in things and missed thesmartesthouse sale. ![]()
@jason0x43 we should still have local control of these devices with your WeMo Connect app, right?
Check. My understanding is automations you establish in the devices before their support expires will continue to run. Of course manual control will work. The App will not work. Integrations will cease. Devices which connect to Apple Home Kit will continue to function. Services which rely on the cloud are proving that hope in their long term viability is disappointing.
That’s my understanding as well. The cloud service is going away, so anything that needs that will stop, but local control, such as through Hubitat or HomeKit, will continue to work.
As far as I know the WEMO connect that I have been using for years isn't local control, it controls thru the WEMO cloud and polls from the WEMO cloud for status. Is there a local control version that I am not aware of?
Just saw this and then came here.
I don’t have any of these devices but I feel sorry for anyone who has paid money for them.
This is similar to what Wink did. And Revolv ....
Also, remember, the Wemo app is going away too, so automations saved/stored on the devices through configuring in the app will become permanent. Best to remove them and transfer functionality to HE. I used to use the random light automations when the home is empty. Have finally transferred them to an HE app.
In addition, the app is required to configure bulb type and dimming range for dimmer switches, so none of that can change. ![]()
Discovered that over half of my outlets which I had decommissioned when replacing Wifi devices, are Homekit compatible. Testing one out. Works great through Home. The HomeKit Controller Integration app has instructions on how to remove them from Home so they can then be paired to HE. Nice!
Wemo latest in a long line.
Was at home depot tonight, saw the "Hubspace" line of stuff and immediately thought, hmm will this last more than a year?
Cloudy with a chance of abandonment
All my wemo devices show as offline in hubitat recently. I tried to reconnect in the WEMO connect app but to no avail. Alexa integration with WEMO still working however, wonder what's broken in the wemo connect app.
The lack of new WEMO device development made me suspicious of their continued enthusiasm for the product line. Realized that "No Hub Required" meant Our Cloud service is required. Over a year ago I replaced all WEMO wall switches, dimmers, and outlet plugs with z-wave or zigbee products controlled by a local Hub. A Hubitat is this case. My home automations have never worked faster and more reliably as now. I have 4 times more devices too.
I have 20+ switches and outlets to replace, would you recommend what you're happy with?
Myself? Raised and trained by an Electrical Contractor who used Leviton and Square D products. So I looked at Leviton who's products I have been familure with since the 1960s. I use their Switches (ZW15S), Dimmers (ZW6HD), their 3 or 4 way remotes for those switches, pull chain Fan controllers (ZW4SF) and receptacle ZW15R. For Smart Plugs the Sengled E1C-NB7 and Minoston MP21Z, and for Smart Bulbs Sengled. Sensors and Dry Contact Relays the Zooz products. Then there is the Hubitat - Abode (security) integration for the door and window contacts. One door has both an Abode (433Mhz) and a Zooz (908Mhz) contact on it. I was using just the Abode integration for that door and it worked BUT half the time the delay extended into the annoying so I added the second contact for hubitat to use directly for turning on a light when that door opens. Faster, more consistent and not reliant on remote servers. On the bright side of loosing WEMOs switches, Dimmers, and Smart plugs is that my 2.4Ghz WiFi had a lot fewer hosts on it than it did which I could see in reduced electrical power consumption. Seems WiFi devices use more power than do powered z-wave-Zigbee devices do.
Thanks for the tips! You info gives me a good place to start.
Quick question, do you know how to get the WeMo Outdoor switch to connect to hubitat. I am not sure what to call it. I assume it uses the same driver as the the switch?
Unfortunately I can't really help there -- I'm not sure what driver the outdoor switch uses or how to get it to connect.
