Backup to Computer automated

Hi,
my expectations would be if you were to get a new hub you pay the difference between the cost of the Cx and Cy AND my expectation would be that it is a published price for going upgrading
for example C5 to C8 $60, C5 to C8 Pro 80
C7 to C8 $40 C7 to C8 Pro 70
Note these are made up numbers and not necessarily correct
If you wanted to exceed my expectations : ) you would upgrade to the latest free of charge but I understand that's not a great business model ; )

This benefit is available (see some exclusions below).

A published pricing would be misleading, or the footnotes would be too confusing based on individual purchased price. Take for example Black Friday sales, eBay purchases, and used hubs. I am sure you could easily see someone buying a C8 hub from eBay for $40 and expecting us to apply the same upgrade price that we offer to someone who purchased a hub for $149.

This benefit is also available depending on the model that needs to be replaced, the nature of the failure as well as the service history.

In summary the internal policy states:

"If no replacement unit is available, customers may receive product credit of equal or proportional value based on the original purchase price, age, and service history of the device. Credit can be applied toward current-generation hardware or eligible services to ensure continuity of use."

I actually find this to be quite ambiguous. Based on the advertised terms of the hub protect service, I would expect to receive a working replacement hub that is at least of equal value. This could even be a refurbished hub. I wouldn't expect to only be given a credit towards the purchase price of a newer generation if my hub were not available because that's not how the service is being advertised.

Being a perfectly content C5 user, if my hub dies I would expect a C5 hub, or the next oldest generation available, to be offered at no cost but shipping. If Hubitat wants to offer a discounted price for the latest generation that's great, but I would not expect that based on the advertised service.

Based on what I've seen on the forum over the years, I'm 100% sure HE would send me a hub, for shipping costs only, even if it were an upgrade from the C5.

From the HE website:
Hub Protect extends your Hubitat Elevation warranty for the duration of your subscription,
as set forth in our Terms of Service. Should your hub fail due to a hardware defect during
your subscription period, Hubitat will send you a replacement hub. Customer pays shipping.

@bobbyD
The answer did not meet my expectations.... as stated very ambiguous...
How about a specific example ...I paid 134.95 on February 23, 2021 for a C7 Hub directly from Hubitat and it fails TODAY and if I'm paying for the service and want the ability to restore everything easily (which needs a C8).
What is the cost?
Thanks
Tim

Indeed. We have plenty of C5s and C7s, even C4s for that matter, to honor Hub Protect claims.

It is a summary. For your specific use case, you would receive a C5, unless you like a different offer better.

You would get a C7 with the ability to restore a cloud backup created using your malfunctioning C7, unless you like a different option offered.

sorry to belabor this but did you miss the part "want the ability to restore everything easily (which needs a C8)."

I didn't miss it  In your situation, you’re not looking for a simple replacement — you want to upgrade to a newer hub to take advantage of features that didn’t exist when your current hub was released. That’s completely reasonable.

Under the Hub Protect extended coverage, you’d be eligible for up to 50% off a C-8 Pro. Since the C-8 is no longer offered as a replacement option, the C-8 Pro is the closest equivalent. The exact discount you receive depends on several factors, including the following:

  • Cause of the issue - a confirmed hardware failure is handled differently than software or configuration problems that can be resolved without replacement.
  • "like-for-like" replacement availability.
  • Length of Hub Protect service - customers with long-standing protection receive a higher benefit than those who subscribed recently or after problems began.

Thanks @bobbyD

After the info concerning what radios will restore to what hubs, and this one involving Hub Protect hub pricing, I think I now understand exactly what to expect and how the program is managed.

I would humbly recommend that more of this information be added to the documentation.

sorry if this is spelled out somewhere.... so my C7 dies, I have a backup from yesterday, I restore that backup on a new C7 hub.
All of the apps are restored and up to date
All of my zwave devices are restored and working as expected
All of my zigbee devices show up under devices clearly.
I can then go down the list and re-pair each zigbee device.
Voila,everything is working

Having a C8 eliminates the BOLD step.

Is that all correct?
Thanks
Tim

Are you referring to cloud backup?

Good question
I setup a script to automatically backup my hub to my PC daily...so THAT backup
Is it different than the cloud one?

That's just a local backup - those do not backup any radio data. The cloud backups backup everything (including all radio data).

Thank you So glad I asked....
so with the local backup, will the device list for zwave and zigbee be populated but I have to repair BOTH ?
If the device list is there is will be a pain to repair all but just time consuming...not confusing.....

sorry your reference provided the info.. Local backup includes the device list but not the contents of the Z-Wave radio or Zigbee pairings. These devices will need to be re-paired if the backup is to a diff hub.,
Now everything is clear!

You can’t just re-pair all your z-wave devices to a new hub from a restored local backup.

You can re-pair all your zigbee devices to a new hub from a restored local backup.

You can't just re-pair Z-Wave devices but unless I'm mistaking, you can pair the devices and then replace the old device with the newly paired same device via the Swap app found in the Settings page ?

There is also a replace option at the end of the pairing sequence that will do the same thing that the Swap app does.
