Zooz Zen34 Remote Switch Issue After Update

After I updated my hub one of my zooz Zen34 remotes no longer is working correctly.

I have a rule setup that when I press the up button it turns on three lamps that are each connected to an Aoetec Smart Switch 7. When I press down it turns them off. I have this setup using the button controller automation.

When I run the action through the automation it works as intended.

When I click the remote nothing happens. It flashes but nothing happens. When I review the events tab it indicates that I have pressed button one and button two but it isn’t triggering the switches. I am really not sure what I am missing.

Without some logs everyone would just be guessing. I have several of the Zen34s and they all are working as expected on the latest firmware, connected to C8 Pro.

Just found that two of my Zen34s had not been updated to the 1.4 firmware. They were spamming the hub with battery level readings. Thought I had fixed that but one was going through batteries pretty quickly. Also it would become unresponsive.

Dumb question but how do I make sure I am updated to the latest firmware.

The firmware will depend on which hardware model of the Z34 you have... The latest for the original hardware (700-series) is 1.40, and the latest for the latest hardware (800LR) is 2.20.

2.20 was just very recently released for the 800LR model.

The firmware currently being used by any device should be shown in the “Device Data” section on its “Device Info” tab page.

You can also look on the back of the Zen34 and it tells you the version it came installed with. The older ones with 1.3 or 1.0 have the spamming issue. The new LR version do not, I belive.

To get the actual firmware files: Zooz doesn't post them publicly, but two easy routes. Fastest is emailing ask@getzooz.com — in my experience they respond within a day and will send the correct file for your exact model, hardware version, and region (matters: US/CA/MX files differ from EU, and the wrong file can brick the device). Longer-term, register your devices at getzooz.com/register and you get direct firmware downloads plus their changelog KB.

Occasionally a device needs exclude/re-include after updating to behave.

That said — since your events tab is showing the button presses, the radio side is working. Worth also opening your Button Controller rule and confirming it still points at the right device and button numbers post-update before assuming firmware. Logs while pressing would settle it, as terminal3 said.

Not publicly per se, but if you setup an account you can download the files from their support website.

The new LR version do not, I believe.

Correct - the 800LR launched with f/w based on the 700’s 1.40.

They absolutely do - all of Zooz’s firmware is readily available to access here:

I thought you had to setup an account to allow access to those but apparently not. I just clicked that link thinking it would ask me to log in but it didn’t and I could still access them

So now you've done it...

Never looked before but did now, and my Zen34 (non-LR) is on 1.30. Should I lie awake at night pondering a FW update to 1.40? If I do update do you absolutely guarantee my life will be undeniably better? (Seriously, I need to know!)

And (oddly?) I can't find any evidence of spamming from my Zen34 on 1.30. :man_shrugging: Had it for over a year or more, and haven't had problems AFAIK.

I'm almost 100 % certain that in the past you had to contact zooz directly for firmware, glad to see it's not that way any more

You are correct - I was remiss not to acknowledge in my earlier response that used to be true… I imagine the hassle factor for Zooz’s CS team finally got to the point it outweighed any apprehensions about just openly posting the files.

In the Zooz community site, they recently vowed to be better about announcing f/w releases there… Otherwise, you just need to check that OTA f/w site occasionally (or when you happen hear of updates from here or other sources). But even that is universes better that having to manually request the f/w!
