Zooz ZEN30 quality issues - Should I give them another chance?

I thought I would share my experience with Zooz as a first time buyer. I bought a ZEN32 and a ZEN30 Double Switch to test them out and check the look and feel.

I'm not super impressed with the button feel.. but for the price I guess I didn't expect much.

The quality on the ZEN30 was terrible though. The relay was DOA. No clicky or continuity in any state even after trying all of the state options and resetting it a few times. The ground screw was also ceased up and took some serious wrangling to get it to turn. There was also an annoying flicker when ramping on the dimmer at the final on level. This switch is going back.

I guess I would also comment that I really don't like the ground screws on these devices at the top.

For anyone that has a bunch of Zooz switches... should I hold out and hope for better experiences or should I go with my initial impressions?

I have a number of Zooz devices, I've been happy with all of them.
I do have a Zen30 installed and the installation and quality are on par with others. I don't use the relay so I can't comment on its operation. I'm using the relay button to create a command to set a certain scene. The dimming seems OK.
The only comment I could make is the housing just barely fits in my older metal switch boxes. The issue is the top to bottom is close (but fits). Depth is OK.

Does your dimmer have a flicker at the end of it ramp when turning on?

Also, does your LED for the dimmer show the second LED down from the top a different color? All of mine are white except the second one is orange.

I'm intrigued that the relay is potentially a dry contact and may be able to support DC voltage.

My LED's are all white. When I hold the lower paddle the light dims to a point (pretty low) then stays there. It doesn't dim to off. Then pressing the lower paddle again and the light goes off.

Basically what I would consider "normal" operation.

I think you likely just got a "bad one".

As for the relay being isolated..... I certainly hope so because I didn't cap the relay wires.

I have a full house of Zooz and am the author for most of the community drivers. I have two ZEN30 v1 deployed and one v3 on my test bench.

This is potentially normal with any dimmer when using with LED lights, especially cheaper LED bulbs. Looks up TRIAC vs MOFSET dimming with LED bulbs (also called leading edge / trailing edge). I forget which style the ZEN30 is, but Zooz usually has it documented in their help files.

That sounds like a defect. Orange is not even a color option on that device, so I suspect one of the LED colors is burned out so it is not able to make white. Did you by chance buy this from Amazon and maybe get shipped a used and returned device by mistake?

Yes it is a separated relay so that it can handle fan motor loads without frying the other circuits. So I suspect it will work on low voltage as well.

Yes, but not used. Came from "The Smartest House". It didn't look used at all. Stickers attached etc.

This fixture has what I think are high quality LED bulbs. 6 Philips Ultra Definition 6.6w.

Based on the Zooz FAQ's they use TRIAC

Yes Philips should typically be good quality LED drivers.

Dimming with LED bulbs has always been hit or miss with me. You could always test out a few other types of bulbs if you have some around. Just to see if it changes anything.

Otherwise it for sure sounds like your device was defective right from the get go so maybe something with the dimmer is blown as well and contributing to the flickering.

Out of all my Zooz devices, I have only had one that was totally DOA and it was a developer sample so it was possibly a returned / used device that they sent me, not realizing it was broken. I think I have only had one other device die that I had to get replaced under warranty.

It's going back. I ordered another of the same to replace it. Another note is that it did come as an 800 LR even though it was advertised as a 700.

In the same spot and use case I'm also going to try the Legrand Netatmo dimmer and 4 button battery powered scene controller. I have a feeling I'll like the buttons better, but they are less feature rich.

I recently purchased seven ZEN32 Scene Controllers. They operate perfectly (as programmed) and look awesome. They are a major component of my lighting control.

Also purchased ZEN77 800LR Dimmers. Great quality, good clamp-type screw terminals, and smaller enclosure design for tight switch boxes. No need for costly proprietary companion switches on 3 or 4 way lighting circuits.

I did purchase a bunch of ZSE42 Water Leak Sensors. Nice compact design except:

  1. Sensor will most likely will be damaged during a minor flood event since enclosure isn't water proof
  2. Bottom sensing probes only extend 1/8" to floor.
Definitely room for improvement. Z-Wave electronics functioned perfectly.

Zooz Z-Wave+ modules are easy to "Include" and seem to function reliably.

As for looks & feel, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

For sure. I am migrating from Control4 so the switches are pretty nice. Perhaps it's "Finger of the beholder"?

Looking forward to seeing some of the Involli Scene controllers once they release. Promise looks good. I just hope the reconfigurable buttons aren't wiggly.

Have you reached out to Zooz? I had a device that just wasn't working correctly out of the box. Sent them an email, and explained what happened, they had me try one or two things, when those didn't work, and they sent me a new one that worked fine. I also have quite a bit of Zooz stuff, and over all, I'm happy with most of it. The only other device of theirs I have that I'm NOT happy with is an XS Tilt sensor, it works, just not as well as I think it should, but its too late to worry about it.

Already exchanged. I'm giving the relay a second a try. Arriving tomorrow. The amazon vendor seems to be the main vendor for Zooz or perhaps they are Zooz. Don't know. When you go to getzooz and try to buy something it takes you to their website. I might have tried support if it was one issue.

If it was the Smartest House, yeah, they are the retail side of Zooz. I've never been able to BUY from getzooz, But The Smartest House is theirs. They usually have some pretty good deals if you go directly to The Smartest House. I've had really good luck with most of my Zooz stuff, and outstanding service.

Yeah TSH is the Zooz sales front end basically, that is essentially buying direct. The only advantage of going Amazon is if you have prime and only want one device, you can possibly get it quicker and cheaper due to free prime shipping. Otherwise if you want multiple devices buy from TSH web site directly and get free shipping on large orders, plus better pricing usually.

The replacement ZEN30 functions as expected. The relay functions. I'm calling the first one mostly DOA. Not sure what was wrong with it, but it didn't work correctly. The relay was non functional.
