Zooz ZEN15 Unresponsive

I have 4 Zooz ZEN15 plugs. 2 of them will randomly become unresponsive. For example, last night, right around midnight, one of them just stopped responding to commands. Unplugging it and plugging it back in doesn’t even bring it back. However, what does, is pressing the button. After that, it’s right back to normal. I don’t really understand it.

Other Z-Wave devices in the room (end devices such as battery operated remotes) also stop responding when this happens, presumably because it isn’t routing commands either.

Anyone else seen this with these before or know what to do to prevent from happening again?

EDIT: Using the Zooz Power Switch driver, if it makes a difference.

What model Hubitat hub? What platform version is the hub running? If C-8Pro, are you using (legacy) ZIP or JS for z-wave?

What hardware version is the Z15 - what firmware is it on? If LR-capable, is it paired LR or mesh?

Are other mains-powered z-wave devices working OK overall?

C-8

2.4.4.146

I'm not sure how to tell the hardware version. Hubitat reports the firmware as 2.10.

I'm not sure if I'm answering this correctly. I did not scan the QR code to pair it but I did pair it securely (S2).

Yes, other Z-Wave devices are working fine. These did for some time as well. Seemed to start one evening when I powered down the hub to let Zigbee mesh rebuild but last night when it started again, the hub had not been powered down (it had been recently updated, but it was working for several hours before it stopped, so don't think update was the cause).

any kind of backup operations going on around midnight?

No, nothing out of the ordinary. It isn’t always around midnight either. The first time I noticed it as I was putting my kids to bed so it could’ve happened at any point during the day) and it was 2 of them. This last time was overnight (around midnight as far as I can tell) and it was only 1 (was 1 of the previous 2).

I have Zen 34's that do the same thing. It was made better by updating the firmware. Used to happen about once a week. Now, it is once every couple of months, if that. Usually, after a power outage or something similar.

What is required to do the firmware update? I’ve never done one on my Hubitat devices before.

Install and use buit in app Device Firmware Updater
https://docs2.hubitat.com/en/apps/device-firmware-updater

Zooz firmware files:

Progress is often slow. You may need to re-start the hub between device updates if the app stalls.

I'd recommend doing after the updates 1) restart the devices by unplugging/replugging, and 2) a full hub Z-Wave restart. Shut down the hub, remove power for 20 seconds, plug the hub back in.

There are 3 variations of the Z15 hardware, and each has its own latest firmware file, so just be sure to get the right file for the hardware model of Z15 you have.

The Change Log link for each Z15 entry on that firmware files page (linked above) is the same -- it details both the hardware and software changes of the Z15's entire history overall.

Did this to one of them and it worked perfectly (I think- I don’t honestly see the new firmware version in Hubitat but from what I can tell, that might be the hardware version as it’s also printed on the back of the plug).

Ran it on the second one and it got stuck on “Sent last firmware fragment. Waiting on device…”. It’s still responding so I aborted and I guess all is OK but now I’m not sure what to do.

I did shut down the hub between updates and pulled the power for 30 seconds.

How do I know if the firmware updates actually took?

Re-start the update app. It will tell you the current firmware on the firmware target dropdown.

OK then yep, they took. Hopefully that'll do it. Thanks for the info everyone!
