Zooz vs GE switches and dimmers

Ok I'm selling my house and moving. Looking at switches again. I've always bought GE. But zooz are$20 less per device. Are ge still worth the money or should I go all zooz?

I have all Jasco/GE switches and am happy with them. But I also have Zooz products other than switches and am happy with those as well.

For my house, the switch color scheme was light almond, so Zooz wasn't an option .. they come only in white.

Have you considered Lutron? Not the cheapest, but they just work, 100% of the time. And, Pico remotes are awesome!

I have a over a dozen older GE switches (dimmer and On/off) and a couple Zooz Zen 22 dimmers. I like them both but going forward I will be buying the Zooz switches. They feel solid, look enough like the GE that I can't see the difference, and are considerably cheaper. I should note that I do not have a ge and Zooz next to each other in a multgang box. I do like the ramping of the Zooz dimmer over the GE.

It's mostly a matter of personal preference.. But support wise, Zooz, Inovelli, and RGBGenie are my favorite companies right now as they all frequent this community...

Pinging @gnant, @agnes.zooz, @Eric_Inovelli ..

I want to do a few rooms upstairs, but need to wait for business to come back before buying more Lutron. I am tempted to reinstall some of my old Leviton Z-Wave switches, but I fear the old "push and pray" method of automation.

To be fair the Leviton issues were when I still on ST, but my fear remains.

Happy to help with any questions -- Zooz is a great brand, can't go wrong!

Thanks for the tag @bcopeland!

@spokra feel free to PM me with any product specific questions. The main hardware difference is that our ZEN26 and ZEN27 switches can be wired with regular on/off switches in 3-way and 4-way set-ups without the need to rewire any of the other switches while with GE you still need the add-on switches. Some users prefer this for the more uniform look and physical dimming from all locations. If dimming from all locations is important to you, you could consider using the ZEN22 model with ZAC99 momentary switches as well.

Software wise, you'll get 20+ advanced settings for the dimmer and all models come with scene control (multi-tap triggers) as well as smart bulb mode where you can disable direct load control and use wireless signal not to cut power off to your smart bulbs.

Good luck with the move!

I have GE, Zooz, and Innovelli switches. In a 3-way application, the Zooz and Innovelli switches were way easier to install. When I installed my first Innovelli switch, I had to learn how to install a custom driver. That required some extra effort, but knowing how to do that is a valuable skill. The Innovelli switches have a multi-color LED that you can use to indicate conditions. I found it was easier to program the Zooz switches for double-tap events than Innovelli, although it is possible for both. I did have one Zooz switch fail. Their customer service dealing with that was great.

FWIW, I too have GE, Zooz & Innovelli, and I flat out prefer the Zooz and Innovelli to the GE. There are some situations where the GE/Jascos do make sense though.

  1. Multipoint Dimmer control. While the Innovelli and Zooz do the 3 way switching really elegantly, inasmuch as I recall, only the master dimmer switch can do dimming, the "dumb" switches are just that, switches, not dimmers. GE add on switches can Dim. To be fair, Innovelli might have this capability with the addon switch, but I'm not sure.

  2. In wall Zigbee switches. If like others you have a Hampton Bay Fan controller, and need a nearby repeater, there's nothing like the GE/Jasco in wall switches to get just that little bit closer to the HBFC...having said that, I haven't seen any real benefit over a Samsung Plug in Outlet as a repeater, so those extra inches closer, may not make much difference!

The Zooz Zen 21, 22, 26 & 27s which I've had pretty much since I started with Hubitat, have been rock solid, and while I only recently got the Innovellis (Red Dimmers) they have been rock solid as well. The sale prices of the Zooz and Innoveli both are typically significantly better than GE prices.

As others have said, the support from Innovelli and Zooz in these forums is fantastic, and I've availed myself of the Zooz helpdesk for some wierd wiring connections and they've been spot on every time.

No doubt, I'd choose both Zooz and Innovelli over GE/Jasco any day. Having said that, I've no complaints with any of the GE Dimmers/Switches I do have, they've been pretty rock solid as well.

I only have a Zen30, and since it is the only product I could find like it, I am very happy with it with one exception. The relay switch takes a very long time to switch, like a second. It doesn't bother me because it also generates a button push about 800 ms earlier, and I am using it to control a smart hampton bay fan's light via hubitat with nothing wired to the switch. When I first had the behavior controlled by the switch turning on, however, it was frustratingly slow.

I also don't know if you had something wired to it directly, if it would take as long.

For dimmers this was an important factor for me being able to control dim from all locations.

The new Inovelli switches work with GE Aux switches or dumb switches but I am not sure if dimming is supported from the Aux. @Eric_Inovelli can you confirm?

I am using two ge aux switches in a 4-way with my red series dimmer and the dimming is fine from with either aux switch. Would have been nice to be able to do multi-tap at the auxes, but that doesn’t appear to be possible.

Yes, the dimmers can work with an aux switch and they will support dimming from both ends :slightly_smiling_face:

They can also be used without a neutral wire - just wanted to throw that out there!

We're trying to see if this can be added via firmware - hang tight!
