I know this has comes up from time to time, but a forum search returns posts that are pretty old. I was looking at the Ikea TRETAKT smart plug but it's currently out of stock for online orders. What's the current recommendation for Zigbee repeaters?
It's my understanding that any mains powered Zigbee device acts as a repeater.
That being said, I am using these:

I've been using Tuya USB repeaters. They have worked very well for me.

I also have two repeaters that are Sonoff zigbee 3.0 dongle-p that were flashed to be routers. I have one of those in my shed - it is about 40 feet from my C-8 pro. And the other one is in an outdoor water heater closet - it about 30 feet from my C-8 pro.
I have ~80 zigbee devices. 6 Tuya repeaters; 2 Sonoff dongles. The other repeaters are Zigbee 3.0 plugs/devices (about 10).
Put some punch in your zigbee. Love these

The USB dongles are interesting. I have a number of in-wall outlets with built-in USB charging ports throughout the house which would make it pretty easy to scatter these around. I wish the dongle body was a bit shorter though.
The challenge with all repeaters is preventing people from unplugging them when they need an open outlet or USB port
Same, but just some cheap Zigbee plugs that you can get on Amazon. No need to use them as switches unless you need one, I just spread them around.
I don't understand the need for a dedicated repeater, is there some advantage to that? I would rather have a multiple plugs in areas that need a repeater.
I ran tests with a large zigbee mesh (on z2m) about 2-3 years ago; all the end devices were original Mijia/Aqara devices.
The zigbee 3.0 outlets available at the time were not great in their performance - every few months, a couple devices would drop off. After switching to the repeaters I currently have, that stopped happening. And z2m mapping indicated that the majority of Aqara/Mijia devices used either a Tuya repeater or a Sonoff dongle as a repeater.
I had a need for a dimmer switch at the specific location I installed the in-wall Zigbee one I posted above. There’s no difference, in my opinion, between this and a plug-in other than the convenience of being able to move the plug-in device. Mains powered is mains powered.
I agree. I use the Third Reality (non power metering unless I need that) smart plugs as repeaters. I have them all through the house. Some are used as a plug some just repeaters but I always have the option for power if needed.
Agreed!
I have 149 Zigbee devices on my main mesh and 0 dedicated repeaters. I have 17 plug-in Zigbee outlets (Iris v2, SmartThings, Ikea) and 5 other mains-powered Zigbee devices that do all of my repeating. I have a highly reliable mesh.
As mentioned above you don't have to have the dedicated repeaters. I have 163 zigbee devices. I have a combination of 10 plugs / presence sensors that are repeaters and 8 bulbs that repeat and I have zero mesh issues (knock on wood). I know bulbs are not ideal repeaters but I have found that Innr bulbs do a pretty good job. They don't allow as many child devices (2 max) is the most the graph shows ony mesh for a bulb but those devices using them as repeaters perform day in and day out with zero issues. The Linptech/Moe's presence sensors surprisingly are my work horses.
I'm not looking for a dedicated repeater. The title of my post really should have been "Zigbee devices capable of repeating recommendations"
Zigbee smart plugs (non power metering unless you just need it), presence sensors, relays, etc. Pretty much anything that plugs in or is installed directly to a power source is a repeater. They work pretty well. Sengled is the only bulb that I know of that is not a repeater. Most people shy away from bulbs as repeaters as I said above however, the Innr does work pretty well. Just scatter these devices throughout your coverage area and you will be fine.
I"m with @jkudave - the 3rd reality units are prime and hit all my targets.
a) they don't cover 2 spots on the receptacle.
b) they are zigbee 3 or whatever its called nowadays.
c) are NOT tuya. (personally I like tuya but the extra work in/around - I pass if it's an option).
d) they do not make a loud click sound when toggled.
e) you can get the cheap ones or the slightly more expensive ones that have power metering. (and the driver appears VERY accurate in this regard.)
f) bought off amazon, silly easy to get, and come in packs of 1,2,or 4. I think (don't quote me please) the power meter version was a paltry $11.
g) etl certified.
h) can be paired to amazon hubs directly if you wish.
The old 'chattiness' thread seems to have gone quiet - and I don't personally see it so... thumbs up on these puppies.
What driver are you using? I just paired a similar repeater and is using the default device driver.
Same. Repeaters don’t need a specific driver to function as a repeater.
This one with healthStatus attribute works great.
Right. The problem I have is that they aren't mapping correctly. I thought maybe there was a driver that worked for this.
Actually, scratch that. As I was writing this I ran a new map and now it is able to be queried.
The one labeled "repeater" is unplugged so that is expected. After I paired the one labeled "WS door" is the one I paired yesterday and it was showing as failed as well. Looks like it just needed some time to decide to talk back.
What driver do you use with these? I have these repeater and since March 30, 2025, they all just went offline. I don’t know if it’s the driver or something happened with the device or what.
