I posted yesterday about my issues with the migration from C-5 to C-8. Everything works great except for Z-wave. Lutron Hub, apps and rules all look great.
During the migration i elected to bring over Z-wave. All devices and nodes show but the functionality is only passive meaning that sensors (sliders, humidity etc) and battery status post correctly. Locks (Schlage) show locked and unlocked when manually done so but not with combo but the locks are not remotely controllable. lights dont post correctly and are not controllable.
I have done the following
hub reboot, leave of for 1 min
refresh each zwave node
do a rebuild of mesh
went in and out of ZwaveJS
tried excluding the device (even got a long ethernet cable and extension cord. Getting a lot of ghost nodes
inclusion isnt working at all
If I re-download my C-5 Backup and uncheck Z-wave and check remove previous files, will all my nodes be gone. What does that do to the device itself? Can I delete them easily without hangups.
Here are my Zwave devices
2 schlage locks
5 leviton decor switches
2 leviton smart plugs
3 AEOTEC zwave extenders
1 AEOTEC multi sensor
2 Dome slider sensors
2 Zooz RGBW controllers for led strips
They are tied into scenes, dashboards, rules and the gametime API
I have tried so many things already that my zwave rebuild is failing on all 17 devices although the sensors are still posting. DOING THIS WIL LNOT DISRUPT MY LUTRON HUB INTEGRATION, CORRECT?? THAT IS THE CORE OF MY AUTOMATION AND ITS WORKING WELL.
Thank you thebearmay. With all my tinkering i factory reset on of the smart plugs and potentially 2 of the decora switches, all though i believe they were just excluded. the zwave mesh is a wreck. While its all not super critical, I would like my exterior lights to turn on with the automation and the locks to be able to open and close remotely. what a mess? probably why I waited so long to upgrade from my C-5.
Can you let me know what would happen if I redownload my cloud migration without zwave and check the delete prior files?
I really hope to get this up and running again soon.
If you want to reset the z-wave radio, which is what it sounds like you are wanting, just go into the diagnostic tool/advanced and you can reset it from there. You may want to restore the migration backup again after doing this, since it sounds like most of your z-wave had been working initially.
Ken_Fraleigh, my zwave worked great on the C-5, but never on the C-8.
sorry to ask, but can you give me a step by step. Im not great with Hubitat. My C-5 was solid but lost the ability to add newer tech.
I am trying to:
remove all the zwave nodes on my C-8
remove the associated devices
factory reset the devices
rebuild the Zwave mesh.
apply the updated devices to existing automation, scenes, etc
Is this reasonable? Inclusion has been a problem on the C-8. I am hoping its due to all the existing node noise. I even had the C-8 within inches on the the device when trying to include. Should I be concerned about my Schlage locks? I CAN NOT lose the codes (so maybe not a factory reset, but a true exclusion on these)
Legacy z-wave has been abandoned by the manufacturer as far as I know. ZWJS is an open source customizable solution that the Hubitat team have been working on (and I assume the future of Z-Wave on Hubitat). It was found to use too much memory for a C-7 or C-8 being used as the only hub, thus only the C-8 Pro has the built in toggle for enabling it. Although there are ways to enable it on the C-8, most people that know how to, hopefully also know what they are doing. Also, I thought you were migrating to a C-8 Pro. I may be confusing you with someone else.
Yes. I was just suggesting that you have everything stable prior to switching as to not introduce another variable. I have switched back and forth several times without any issues besides needing some modifications to ZWJS for some pia GE switches that Brian is working on fixing.
If you end up just starting from scratch (with your z-wave devices), I would definitely switch to zwjs first. Create virtual switches/dimmers for each device and use the device swap app to switch them out with your real devices, delete/exclude the real devices, include them back, then swap them back using the device swap app again. @thebearmay may have better suggestions for this. My network is mostly Zigbee and my z-wave has been so stable that I have only ever had to switch out 1 device in the past 5 years.
Exactly. As they say, donโt invite trouble. Although I have read that ghosts are much easier to remove on zwjs (I fortunately have not had to deal with them).
Also, @stevepotler, it may be that you had ghosts on your C-5 that you replicated on your Pro with the z-wave restore, and that is why you are having these issues. You canโt see them on the C-5, but they are still there.
Perhaps restoring your migration backup again and going on a ghost busting mission would fix this.
I should mention that once you have everything working properly, you are going to appreciate how much faster everything runs on the Pro.
Ken_Fraleigh, thank you again! can you tell me what you mean by stable? On the C-8 pro, from the beginning almost all devices do not work. Lights switches and smart plugs did not turn on through Hubitat, Locks did not lock or unlock through hubitat either. This all worked on my C-5. on my initial migration attempt, nodes and devices showed, functionality was absent other than posting Lock status and other sensors like sliders and humidity. As i tried to resolve i may have excluded a device or two further messing up the mesh.
You can repeat your migration w/out causing any harm...possible you had a glitch on the initial migration. Trying again won't hurt, could help.
Create a new migration backup from your original hub. Make sure you select both Zigbee and Z-Wave radios for migrating when you create the migration backup. I'm assuming you have a C5 w/an internal Zigbee radio, not the external one. Migrating from C5 using external radio is not supported. From HE documentation:
Migrating Zigbee to a new hub is supported only on model C-8 or C-8 Pro; Zigbee can be migrated from any hub model C-7 or C-5 (if using internal radios).
After creating the migration backup, turn off and unplug the C5.
Then boot up the C8 and restore the migration backup to your new hub.
If Z-Wave and Zigbee were working fine on the C5 they should also be fine on the C8. If either was unstable/unreliable on the C5 they likely will be on the C8 as well, but the C8 has better tools to troubleshoot/fix stuff.
Not that. But like I said, you might want to consider switching to ZWJS if all else fails and you decide to just exclude the devices that are not working and include them fresh because zwjs has better functionality for this.
I reset the z-wave radio and it blew out all the nodes. I simply did a remove /exclude on all the devices and then an include. The inclusion process is much easier on the C-8 Pro - faster and more powerful. Im down to just the 2 light strips. Thank you all. this RESOLVED
