Haven't seen this addressed in my recent searching but can a device have an 800 series chip and NOT be long range compatible? I have a Minoston MP24Z that is supposedly 800 series but I cannot get it to pair via long range.
Not every 800 device is LR - for instance the ZAC38 is not (since it's primary purpose is as a mesh repeater).
I think it would be unusual to otherwise have a 800 device that isn't LR-capable, but it's clearly possible.
700 devices can do LR too, but most currently don't, so they'd require a firmware update to enable it. Zooz seems interested in perhaps doing that with some of their 700 stuff, but I suspect them and most vendors will just change to 800 chips instead of messing with thier 700 stuff.
Ya I figured that was the case  Was hoping I was wrong!
I just hit them up today about the ZEN05. I have several of the 700 version from last year. I know the newest version, the 800 is LR... I asked about a firmware update to the 700 version so I could use them instead of buying something new...
They said it wasn't possible... Not sure if that means not actually possible or they don't want to spend the time and resources to do it when they can sell the newer 800 series...
Yeah, I don't know -- they've released a LR f/w update for the original 700 Z51/52, so it's possible in some cases at least...
It could be there are circumstances that don't make it possible in other cases, or they're just like "Meh, eff it, we'll just go to 800LR soon anyway".
IIRC, the previous gen chips get scarce quickly when the new gen is released, so unless a company is sitting on a big stockpile, there's probably little motivation for them to not just roll with the new chip.
I think its cause they had a ton of the 51/52 devices and wanted to make them a little more appealing... Just my .02...
I read somewhere on here that adding the LR support to a 700 device requires a larger firmware file and some devices just do not have room on the chip to handle it. So this is possibly the case with the ZEN05. Or like you said they just dont want to.
I figured I'd try... ![]()
The new ZEN05 also adds power reporting if that is of interest. I just added support for the settings to my driver this week.
Yeah, I saw that... And I do use your drivers... But I figured I'd save some money and use the ZEN05's I bought less than a year ago... ![]()
I'm back to my other plan of embedding ZEN52's behind some regular outlets... This is for remote yard lighting... But alas, I have to get past that other LR node missing problem first...
Save the old ZEN05 for holiday lights, they work good both indoors and outdoors. Thats what I ended up using my sample device for.
Hey Jeff,
I got a second email last night from the Zooz support folks, reference the older ZEN05's.
The 700 series chips can be updated to LR via a firmware update; we are currently reviewing the practicality and cost of such an update and have not confirmed if we will be providing this update on all 700 units going forward. We'll reach out if we move forward with the update for the 700 series going forward.
So it appears they can in theory be updated, but obviously they have to weigh the business decision. Since you are pretty tight with them, maybe lend your voice in support. ![]()
