Well I was pleased to see the introduction of some standardization for the smart home.
But it aint there yet. I bought a mater mini switch module on aliexpress for $4 to experiment with.
Used 3r-installer app to commission the device then control it with Hubitat. It was kind of a PIA to get working but took less then 5 minutes. So I wanted to remove one of my smart plugs on a lamp and replace it with a Smart Bulb. Figure mater supported device. Enter WIZ Matter Smart Bulb. I spent several hours just trying to get it commissioned. 3r-installer didn't work so I dug out an old amazon echo dot ver2 I bought in 2018. That took another few hours before I got it commissioned via alexa. Once commissioned I got the 11 digit setup code and tried to set it up in Hubitat. NOT. I fnally gave up and am going to purchase Zibee bulb. I guess my experimentation with matter is over. Although I love the mesh network idea eliminating the need for AP's all over the place. Let me know when matter is it.
Yeah, matter has a long way to go. Hopefully Matter 1.3 will clear up a lot of things. What ever device you have, use the native app to start it and make sure it has the latest manufacturer's firmware. Once that is done, factory reset it and commission it normally. Eventually once the Hubiat app is given permissions to use the bluetooth in your phone, you will be able to commission matter devices directly to hubitat.
The 3r Installer was a breeze, cryptic but it worked on the mini switch. Alexa what a PIA. And now I deleted the bulb an I cant get it to commission again. I just bought another bulb for 7 bucks, see if this one works. And the WIZ is wizing back to Amazon. Next step is Zigbee. I just realized something else. If you loose the box the bulb came in with the pairing code on it you may as well throw out the device
Did you factory reset the bulb itself?
If you look on the base, the manual code is printed on the side. It will be a 6 or 8 digit number.
Based on there info on/off 5 times bulb turns blue and pulsates is factory. I must have tried 10 times yesterday and it finally comissioned. Then I went in an d got the sharing code and tried to pair it with Hubitat and it failed. So I started over with no luck.
As far as the commissioning bar code code its 11 digits on the box.
On the bottom of the bulb is the model # and FCC an IC id. on the skirt and there is nothing printed or stamped on the metal base. I'll try a couple of more times tonight.
Unless there is a hook to make it work with Hubitat its useless to me.
Not exactly sure what you're referring to here, as this is not a problem Matter aims to solve. Matter over Wi-Fi devices, if this is what you mean, require an AP within range of them, just like any Wi-Fi device does. They do not form their own Wi-Fi mesh network. Thread -- the other native protocol for Matter -- is separate, and I suppose it could be said to reduce this need, but not any more than Z-Wave or especially Zigbee (which is quite similar to at the physical layer) do.
As for Matter itself, it's still pretty young. More manufacturers do seem to be making more devices that support it, and while there have been some problems (e.g., misinterpreted implementation of the specs; problems with the devices themselves), some of these have been addressed by manufacturer firmware updates, and hopefully the situation will continue to improve.
Meanwhile, I am using several Matter devices, mostly over Thread, successfully in my setup. It's certainly not a total disaster for everyone. I can't say I'd choose it in particular over Zigbee or Z-Wave at the moment if both or all options are available, but that's often not the case and you just have to pick the device that has the features you want with whatever protocol it has.Where I try to draw the line is whether it's something standard that can work with my hub if I need/want it to, and I'm happy to see Matter shaping up to maybe be that choice for more cases in the future where it could have been some proprietary implementation.
I just received a Caupureye Matter Smart bulb from Amazon and with 3r Installer I got the pairing credentials is less then 5 minutes. Never could get the WIZ to pair.
