Can only back up specific data to the redundant second drive? Like I can automatically mirror my documents etc but not mirror my dvr?
The two bay NAS mirrors the other drive exactly. So if one drive fails, your data is safe on the other.
What i want its my primary hdd is 5tb and the mirror one is 1tb. Can I choose the 1 tb I want backed up.
In my case, I’d have 200gb of “important stuff” then 4tb of dvr I could care less about. I’d def need 1 5tb drive for my primary, but I’d only want maybe a 1tb for my second. A second 5tb seems like a waste of $, no?
I understand I’m sounding real cheap, but hey!
I think you can run them as independent drives and use it that way. Not sure. I always set up the dual version with mirroring or I setup the multi bay versions with a raid set.
I’ll have a two bay version here in a couple of days. Can tell you then. You could also just put a single drive in the two bay model (because that’s a very good price. Better than the single bay) and the just attach an external drive to it and backup as you like.
It depends whether you want a multi-bay nas for the option of mirroring with raid 1.
If not all your data is all that critical, get a single-bay nas and a smaller backup drive connected by usb.
Thanks, can you please try that. I THINK it can be done with shr DiskStation Manager - Knowledge Base | Synology Inc.
That’s what I need, but the 2 bay he posted is the same price
Best to order that now to secure the price. You can always send it back. You know how Amazon prices are. No guarantees it will be that price tomorrow.
I just saw the one bay is only $99. And I have a spare 4tb external. How “hard” is it to back up? The external shows up as well over lan?
It’s wizard driven. Very simple UI. Yes, you can access the mounted volumes over LAN.
Thank you. I think the 1bay is best for me
Not trying to shift you one way or the other, and to be honest I’m here to talk about home automation, much more than a NAS You have to stay within a budget and that’s totally understandable. Just hate to see limited funds not spent as wisely as possible. No offense intended of by that of course.
Just be aware that the single bay you are considering is significantly less powerful in processor at half the cores, running at near half the speed, and 1/4 the RAM. Also, accessing a drive connected via USB 3.0 over the network is very slow and not at all a great experience. Fine for unattended backup, but not live data access. Over all, for a $50 savings, the experience will be significantly slower.
Synology offer quite a number of really useful apps the are simple to install and use. But on a slow system (I’ll use my own as an example) they are either not available, or too slow to be useful.
@frmWink2Hubitat Are you still looking for info on the drive configuration of the DS220j or similar dual bay unit, or have you decided for sure on the single bay unit?
The dual bay I need to setup for a client just arrive today. If you still would like that info, then just let me know. Otherwise, I'm just going to set it up for mirroring and get it out the door.
Thanks, but don’t go out your way. Thanks though
