What I should say to my wife?

Hello brothers ! I decided just for fun and to help Hubitat to upgrade from C-8 to C-8 Pro. Everything was working fine on my C-8. But when possible I love to get the latest hardware.

After upgrading, I lost my Zigbee network for 2 days and now none of my 230 webcore pistons are working even with disabling everything liek what I read. Now I'm restoring them one by one.

My question for you is: When my wife asks me why I upgraded from C-8 to C-8 Pro with all these problems, what should I answer her ?

“Dear, I did this to keep me out of gin-joints and honky-tonks. So really the upgrade was for you“.

Since the upgrade, everything is crap. But it will be exactly the same in 2 days. I will be very happy and I like doing that, but I have nothing to tell her. Yes it was necessary to pay $300CAD to be a bit faster. During these 2 days it was not working but I worked hard  Now I'm happy and I'm sure you understand, but not her ! I'll plan better for the next upgrade !

I guess they will go out with C-9 soon since I just upgraded  .

You could try:

Having issues with your home network keeping up.

And then order some new Unifi gear.
It's never worked for me but... :person_shrugging:

How about, "I'm a grown man, I wanted it, and it's not as if I went out and bought a sports car or private plane. When's dinner?"

You could also ask what she wants for dinner, if you do most of the cooking. The point is, don't apologize or walk in with your hat in your hand.

Years ago, my wife and I set a spending threshold for each other. Anything under that threshold requires no spouse consult. Anything over it and we discuss it out of fairness to the other person. Works great. We've raised the threshold from time to time over the years. It's now in the thousands. We'll probably lower it as we move into retirement.

I can buy what I want, except that she asks questions like: Why did you say you upgrade your home automation and nothing is working now when it was working fine before ?

Just keep doing it and eventually she will not waste her time asking a question that she knows you have no good answer for. She will simply just say "so you upgraded again" and roll her eyes and walk away

Even when everything in my house works perfectly, I still get "Damnit Andy your stupid Hubitat is broken again!", only to find out it still works perfectly fine but a bulb has burnt out.

My favorite is " your STUPID SMART home is acting up again" I remind her, I don't waste time watching sports, drinking, buying unnecessary sports cars, but I DO make all the money. Now what's for dinner?

I have a bunch of Wyze cameras that require their server to display an image. Just tell her sunspots or an upgrade broke it, and by hassling you, that doesn’t make it fix itself any faster.

"A beer might help".

That would work in my house, as long as my goodwill account was still positive (usually is).

..... what's a wife/husband? :joy:

All my automations have manual overrides. Light switches in the walls, Lamps which can be turned off and on. Metal keys for doors. Should the automation be "down" which is not all often, just go back to the old fashion way and flip the switch or turn the key. For the rest, do without for a while.

Same here. The ONLY thing that doesn't work manually is the bathroom exhaust fans, because those switches have been set to work as buttons. My wife resisted home automation and smart assistant voice commands for a long time. Now, she gets quite irritated and sometimes upset when automation glitches or voice commands don't work!

Dont say anything, just leave a piece of equivalent value jewelry on her nightstand.

My "Why did you upgrade/change that?" justification when I change something and she notices because things go sideways for a while is some artful combination of:

  1. Faster/better performance (usually true w/newer HW)
  2. Need to replace older HW that's losing support (sometimes true, and she generally gets this - similar to her phone, laptop, etc.)
  3. Better security (she always likes this so I admit I'll trot this reason out even when not necessarily applicable)
  4. More options/capabilities = more fun for me (hobby aspect, though she would like me to automate less, she has become just slightly more understanding of this angle over time)

Funny part is, before HA she was a serial offender in leaving lights on as she moved from room to room, I could always tell where she had been by following the lights. Never bothered her. However, w/HA she's very concerned if a light doesn't go out as expected. :man_shrugging:
