The IKEA tradfri signal repeater driver works great, but I’ve heard they also work fine with the generic “device” driver.

The driver doesn't matter, as it not involved in the repeating/routing functions of the device. The device simply does that on its own when its joined to the Zigbee network. The "Device" driver will work fine; it's possible the IKEA Trådfri repeater driver mentioned above will too, but the only advantage there is a couple commands the driver offers for diagnostics that you might be able to run (if the device supports it; you can certainly try and switch back if it doesn't--or keep it since it doesn't really matter).
