Ver .130 zigbee power drop

Noticed the default power was dropped to 8 in the latest release...but it didn't change existing setups. What is your recommendation for those?

During the beta testing, Mike explained it would drop you to 8 only if you'd left the (previous) default alone at 16.

If you'd (previously) manually changed your power to something other than 16, it should leave your power set at your desired setting.

Going forward, new C8s will use 8 as default instead of 16. Though it was ever said explicitly (that I can recall), the conclusion is that lower power (e.g. 8) is now determined to be - in general - a better starting-off point than a higher power (e.g. 16).

As with all things, YMMV.

doesnt seem true mine was at 16 and still is at 16 after upgradoing.

Dunno, maybe they changed it before going GA.

To me, it would make most sense to leave it at whatever it was no matter what, but you'd have to ask Mike where all that landed with .130

I think that if you changed the Zigbee channel that also counts as the Zigbee power level is saved with the channel change.

I recall seeing Mike mention this as well. If the power or channel has been changed, they won't modify it.

FWIW to anyone playing from home, I've been on power 8 for well over a month and working well there.

Me too. I've only experimented with 12 and 8 and both seemed fine, but I'm staying with 8 because 1.) 8 is said to be closest to C7 power (so it's the devil I know), and 2.) I have a robust ZB mesh, so I'd rather err on the side of offloading workload to the repeaters instead of chasing as many direct-connects as possible.

20 ftw.

If someone updated zigbee power level or channel setting on a C8, power level gets explicitly saved in the database and that value persists through 130 update. If not, default level value is used, and that default value has changed in 130.

Same here. I don’t have any more child devices than I had on my C-5, despite the higher power, but I do see more of my repeaters showing up in the route table, which is always full now. I am grateful for the ability to have my power set to 20, but I bet this ability has contributed to some of the issues people are having and has caused headaches for HE staff.

On the other hand, I now have my Hue indoor motion in a plastic bag at the back of my plastic mailbox at the end of a long driveway, where the signal wouldn't reach before. Z-wave as well, but that's not the subject.
