Variables and negative numbers

When writing a Rule with a variable will this variable recognize a negative number such as -15.7?

What I have is a temp sensor tapped to the side of my apartment building. When the lux gets high I assume the house warms up and increases the temp the sensor reports.

AFAIK, You can set a decimal variable to a negative value.
