I have been reading here about variables and connectors. I just do not understand the difference.
A connector (which is increasingly redundant with hub updates) is a virtual device you can use like any other device in dashboards etc, while the variable holds pretty much the same info but didn't used to be able to be used in some places a connector could be used. In order to use a variable in the places you used to need a connector it has to be one of the new hub variables not the sort we used in RM4.
NB a variable can exist without a connector, but a connector is no good unless it is connected to a variable. A connector exposes the value of the variable
So if I am going to use a variable in an app (dashboard, webcore), then I will need a connector associated with it? Please describe a situation when ONLY a variable would be needed.
With the introduction of Hub Variables, Connectors are being phased out. The original implentation appears to have been a bridge from RM to the Dashboard and custom apps.
I think the best advice is just create the variable, and don't bother with a connector until you find yourself up against a situation where you can't get to your variable. It may not happen if your hub has all the updates. Can't speak for webcore tho as I have not used it myself.
webCoRE can now access the Hub Variables directlyโฆ
Thanks everyone.
