What ups would you recommend for 1/2 rack with around 400-500w average load,? I assume NUT is software you can monitor the ups with as it must run some light Linux distribution which can assist with auto device shutdown on low battery output?
If 400-500 watts is your average load, you will need a larger UPS than a half-rackspace. Here's a full rack-2U that does 900 watts max, and at 450 watts load you get about 11 minutes of backup. Max load is less than 5 minutes..
And yea, NUT-Server is a super lightweight software that will run on basically any linux distro (I prefer debian or armbian personally). It takes a little work to get set up, but documentation is abundant and the process is really not too complicated. I run mine on a tiny little pi-zero type board with a battery carrier so it is the very last thing alive in my house after all the UPS's have depleted.
FWIW, for I like these:
Traditional lead-acid based UPSs require battery replacement every 3-5 years, which is a pain. The newer lithium based UPSs require battery replacement every 8-10 years. A little bit more expensive to start, but worth it in the long run (at least to me).
They have a 1U variant, but it's only 500VA.
