Unreliable Geofencing

My once reliable geofencing on the latest iOS mobile app has been unreliable the last few weeks on the latest hub firmware. This is the case for all 6 members of my immediate family.

I can confirm location is set to Always.
And every time I try I’m able to successfully send a notification.

Also I notice if I manually send a geo event from the app, the hub device updates correctly.

Any thoughts on other places to look or things to try? @gopher.ny wld you mind taking a look at the engineering logs?

Edit: I also notice the hub device, when out of sync, always has out of date last activity dates.

@Hubitat_Staff could I ask the appropriate person to look at the engineering logs and/or offer any troubleshooting tips? Nothing from the community…

So as a long time user of Hubitat, I just wouldn't rely on the Hubitat mobile app on any OS as a reliable presence device.

I thought maybe Home Assistant might be better but the results are identical. It has to do with the way Android and iOS handle background tasks, and over about 6 years of using Hubitat and over a year with Home Assistant, I can safely say you need another primary way to handle presence. Mobile app geofencing just isn't reliable enough.

Fair point. I am not relying on it and have never. But, up until a few weeks ago, I could rely on it as ONE input in a combination of three that are integrated together. Even now, it works swimmingly at the integrated level, despite my problems with Hubitat geofencing. Just want to make sure each source is as solid as possible so quality doesn’t erode.

Yeah. So here's the thing... If you manage to keep the app always open and in focus with the device screen on, then it will work perfectly every time. But since that style of operation is basically impossible on a phone, your mileage will vary. I am not sure how else you can make phone geofencing very solid without ensuring the app is never put to sleep in the background.

@a.mcdear
very true..

What I’m still struggling to understand is why it was reliable for so long and then stopped? It’s not like we used to keep the app open and in focus all the time — never have and still don’t. And probably not practically possible. Headscratcher…
