It’s shocking g to me how much people are willing to pay for their beta hardware. Unlike beta software which can be upgraded as they find bugs, hat happens if they discover a hardware issue in the beta? You’re just SOL? Do they have a policy to replace it for you?
I’ve never had to pay extra before for the privilege of being an unpaid tester before!
I agree they do seem to have an odd business model.
Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to giving some of their WiFi 6 APs a try. I picked up two of the long-range APs a couple weeks ago when they were briefly available.
I’m still on the fence re: the unifi gateway devices vs. just sticking with an Asus router.
You are a lucky man sir. As soon as tech is "available" IT peps are expected to be instant experts in every facet of it. I once had a client get upset because I didn't have "10 years experience" with a technology that had been introduced to market less than 8 months prior.
Sometimes we can use all the help we can get, good or bad. Which is why I snagged a mesh6 while I had the chance.
Unless you "want" the fanciness of Unifi, Asus will get you gone just as well for home gamers.
That’s not what we’re talking about here though. You are describing a business expense to learn a new technology. That’s very different than buying beta hardware for end-user production use. Yes, of course I’ve bought hardware to learn a new technology. But that’s a different story than paying a company to run my home network on semi-working technology.
I guess I might go for that newer generation security gateway if it comes out of beta (i.e. it's actually in stock for a while), has reports of solid firmware, and comes down in price a bit.
For now it's probably simpler to stick with the status quo, as I've mentioned before I like Asus, especially running merlin firmware.
I don't think that is why Unifi has a beta program thu is what I'm saying. They cannot stop people that have EA access, and do not NEED the product, from buying it. I would not say that equals a business model.
I think you may have replied to the wrong person. I didn’t claim it was their business model. I simply said I’m surprised that so many people want to pay so much for beta hardware to run their homes. I’m commenting on the consumer, not the company.
Oh sorry guess I combined some replies, didn't mean to upset.
AX is a 'better' tech than AC, so some may "want" that too. But I agree it is over priced for beta tech unless the $$ is not your motivation Personally I'm interested to see if they can really pull off solid 2.4G wifi consistantly
Really? I’ve upgraded a handful of laptop WiFi cards over the years, mini-pcie and more recently m.2. All that was required was popping the antenna connectors off, unscrewing a retention screw then slipping it out of the motherboard slot.
I usually buy on the back-side of new tech, wait for issues to work out, support to spread, and for the "New-Toy-Tax" pricing to subside. But I can see in a new home wanting to start out w/some new stuff.
I do wish that Unifi would get going again on WPA3 for their more recent generation of APs...they had a beta going but then snuffed it.
