I wanted to automate control of my gas fireplace, however mains power is not available anywhere near the unit, so I needed a solution that was battery powered. The fireplace lights off when a couple of terminals on the gas control valve are bridged. I mounted a ThirdReality switch onto a standard wall-outlet rocker switch which provides the contact closure. To camouflage the ThirdReaity I sprayed it with flat black paint and then shoved the pair of switches under the firebox within the inlet air path. As it's not really fireplace season now, I've only let the fire run for a few minutes at a time to test the application, and I'm hoping the switch will not suffer from heat when the fireplace runs day-long next winter.
