Third Party Developers like Rboy

I'm actually quite amazed at how much the staff engages the community. It's really been very reassuring.

I am of the same mindset as the others on this thread - that the company can do what it wants and it is up to us to accept it or maybe consider other options.

Also the same for RBoy - I think I actually have 2 lifetime memberships with him/them - they can do what they want too. Really liked their lock code manager and other stuff.

If they can't make it work then I will not be using RBoys stuff - Hubitat is more critical to my needs at this point.

I am happy to honor BOTH license agreements.

That is one of the more conceited statements I have read in a while. What makes you think that there would be any consistency in the values of Hubitat's customers? Any values (in the context you are referring to) stated by hubitat would align with some customers and not align with others. That's the nature of values.

Maybe I misread your statement and you meant to give them every opportunity to see if they have values that align with your values. If that is the case then state it as such.

Any value they ever state will align with some of their customers' own values and will not align with other customers' values. If everyone had the same "Values" the word "Value" would not exist in this context. Think about it for a second. Much better to stay out of the business of "declaring your values" and much better to stay in the business of "creating a fantastic home automation hub".

I definitely do want the staff at Hubitat to work on values. My Honeywell T6 zwave thermostat does not like any temperature value in half degree increments when set to Celsius.

Dear Hubitat,

Today, all companies develop their brand and have a strategy as such. For some companies, their product and the support they provide with their product is the way they build their brand. For other companies, they align their brand with one or more of the various values that you find among groups of people in society. Through this alignment they hope to build a relationship with these customers and ensure there is agreement between the company and their customer when it comes to these values.

Obviously, in today's business world, developing your brand by aligning with specific customers' values is the best way to proceed. So before I decide to purchase a second hub, I need you to state your values in these areas:

Gun Control
Abortion
Animal Rights
Vaccines
Socialism
Climate Change
Copyright
Marijuana Legalization
Capital Punishment
Immigration
Cancel Culture
Universal Healthcare
Business Ethics

I have the right to only purchase products from companies whose values align with my own. Please don't take away my freedom of choice.

Hi Stephan,

It is a common for corporations big and small to share their values so that customers (in plural form) can decide for themselves if they want to business with that corporation. Perhaps less common in the commodities business (and i am using the economic definition of a commodity, a fungible product in which market treats its substituted as equivalent values without regards to who produced it). But definately common in the technology industry.

Innate objects do not hold values. Corporations do hold values in the way that they act and behave, examplified through policies and interactions. Corporations culture becomes evident in what they do and how they act.

Size of corporation does not mean there is no culture, it exits it may just not be as formalized as it is when you have professional managers who have training in how to build high performing teams. Typically from MBA schools where leadership principles are drilled into them. The various review pages like yelp etc are chock full of examples of both poor and strong leadership evidenced through culture whose values guides the behavior of the company.

Sheesh, we're not exactly talking about advanced management techniques here.

Here is a longer writeup that articulates these points. They apply to a gas station owner just as much as to a multi national corporation.

for your light weekend read, a short writeup on management theory:

I'm out, going to go fishing. Be well.

I am jealous, I live in Canada and we can't go fishing right now. There is about a quarter inch of ice on the water. Too much for a boat, not enough for ice fishing. What are you going out for?

Dungeness crab and rockcod. We got a head start on the commercial season for sport fishing, there are still whales in water outside half moon bay (just south of san francisco) so the commercial guys cant put down their traps due to risk of entanglement. I think we get another week of fishing before the commercial crews sweep the ocean. I hear the boats come back with full limits (ten crabs per person).

Last time i fished for crab was about twenty years ago, looking forward to going out with three old friends. We're on a crewed sport fishing charter. With any luck it won't be too windy so it wont get terribly cold.

Good luck! Post some pics when you get back.

Sounds like fun...we used to fish for blue crabs in Virginia when I was a kid, using chicken legs, etc., attached to string. We would raid our mom's planned dinner supplies to catch crabs w/it. Mom didn't like that.

Nasty little beasts, they could do some serious damage if you weren't careful.*

  • Crabs I mean, not my mom.

This topic has gone fishing....
