I think there are probably more than a few of people my age that cobbled up something similar. The ON was always easy, off was either complicated with pulleys and getting the right angles or it was done by allowing a weight of some sort to drop (essentially creating a One-Shot).
I think it is part of a Dead Man's Switch. There is a dead man at the other end.
