The Great Fridge/Freezer Temperature Sensor Challenge

@aaiyar :slight_smile:
Just out of curiosity, have you been able to consistently keep Aqara devices connected to Hubitat with the Sonoff USB Dongle?
As we know, the Aqara devices do not fully adhere to Zigbee standards but perhaps this repeater (which does conform to Zigbee standards) can take over, and "repeat" the message from the Aqara sensors.

Haven't tried.

I have Aquara contact sensors on all my windows (they were the only ones that had the right dimensions). They use to disconnect regularly, so I had added some IKEA repeaters which helped. However, since I added a Sonoff USB Dongle to a plug next to each of those sensors, they rarely if ever drop out. I also haven’t had to change their batteries yet in the 2-3 years since I installed them.

I have some of the Iris motion sensors (that you can't find anymore) in my fridge and freezer. Motion, temp, and humidity. They've been working solid for over a year. Battery life is decent with a lithium CR123 or whatever it is that they take. I have one in my gun safe with a plug next to it as a repeater.

says their rated -10C to 40C (14F - 104F). This isn't really low enough for a freezer I don't think, which is

0F or -18C.

I can confirm! I put a SNZB-02 in my chest freezer and it will not read below 15 F. The freezer is actually at -3 F.

My freezer goes down to -11F and temp was recorded close to that today.

One should expect that the temperature gauge in these devices is not very exact.
Furthermore, I have found that "where" in the freezer makes a very big difference, especially in a chest freezer versus a "stand up" freezer.
Finally, these are contact sensors first, temperature sensors second.

Ambient weather station waterproof probe remote sensor. 10 ft waterproof probe, easily works through the door seal. 2 AA batteries, this has been running on the first set for three years. There is an Ecowitt version as well that does not require a full weather station. https://ambientweather.com/wh31p-water-proof-probe-temperature-sensor

Odd... I used to have the old, square SNZB-02 and had no trouble with them getting down to <-10C. I am currently using the updated (and much better, IMO) SNZB-02P, and it is also only spec'd down to -10C. The lowest temp I see recorded in recent events is -10.84Freedom, which converts to ~-24C.

Based on my experience with both units, I wouldn't have any trouble using them in a freezer, though I understand some people will be spooked by the specs. Not sure why they are rated so 'high,' as obviously the temperature sensor will go lower. Perhaps the tolerance gets a little worse at the ends of the range, or the system chip isn't rated that low, or perhaps they're just worried about battery life. Not sure...

But, how do you get those to talk to the Hub?

That app uses the Ambient cloud API. Instead, use [PROJECT] Driver for Ambient API/Local and Ecowitt instead, as it supports local direct data from the Ambient weather station.

Now I reckon this is the most suitable Zigbee sensor for monitoring fridge temperature.

  • the battery part stays outside the fridge, so it won’t affect battery life
  • can measure temps as low as -40Β°C/-40℉
  • even comes with a screen (might not be essential, but someone will like it)
    All for just $17.9.

That sensor won't tell you that the door to the fridge was left open!

Putting a contact sensor on the door and aligning it so it shows open with the door is not fully closed will do the trick. Also helps when adding lights to an older freezer with no internal light.
