I usually watch Big Clive and this teardown's along with reverse engineering of cheap stuff from Ali Express and Ebay. Today he posted his teardown of the Ubiquity U6 Mesh access point. I have these devices and if you ever wonder why they are pricy this is a really good video to watch:
Booooo... .. Hisssss.... From a Netgear Owner.....Boooo .... Hisssssssss.....
I have a u6 enterprise, the rest in my house at AP AC-Pro's
I literally just bought 2 of them yesterday, to see if replacing the Asus XT9 mesh will stop my wireless clients disconnecting frequently. XT9 has been utterly frustrating to manage.
Omg. I see they have shares in a thermal pad company.
Nothing like being selective on what you want to cool.
My network hardware is all Ubiquiti and I do have one of these AP's along with some other U6-LR's. Every manufacturer is going to have quirks, but over all my years, this is definitely the best I've had. I replaced all my Netgear equipment with UniFi devices. Netgear was okay, to a point. Once I had a couple of failures I opted to get rid of their products. Support? What support? I can't say enough about how terrible it was. Had this not been a factor, I may never have moved away from them. Knock on wood, UniFi has been very reliable for me. Any issues I did have were well supported and resolved.
That AP does look to be very well constructed.
Heat is the enemy of access points. It causes all sorts of radio frequency drift and sensitivity issues. It was cool to see that housing is half plastic at the top and metal to transfer heat at the bottom. Also look at the angles of the internal antennas. Some serious magic to create a specific radiation pattern.
The on thing that is irritating about my current ap setup (I only have unifi ap's but use cisco and watchguard on the back end) is now that my U6 is installed I had to create an additional SSID without wifi 6. Why? Because when you set it to wifi 6 on the AP it forces WPA 3 for 2.4, 5 and 6. It does not allow a step down to WPA 2 so a lot of older devices cannot connect....annoying.
You can thank the Wi-Fi Alliance for that. To be certified Wi-Fi 6 only WPA 3 is allowed.
Yeah, I know, still irritating.
