Suggestions/Recommendations for making a Dumb Garage Door Opener, SMART

I am not just looking for control to open and close it, but I would like some kind of sensor to detect the open/close state.

Let me know what you guys have used or using to complete this task. I am looking forward to hearing about and doing some more research based on the responses.

I use a Zen17 (paired LR) and 2 wired (dumb) reed sensors -- one for full-open and one for full-closed. But you really just need one.

Many folks use a wireless tilt sensor on the door instead of wiring a reed sensor.

I have a detached (unconditioned) garage here in MN and the seasonal temp extremes are brutal, so I don't use any battery-powered stuff in my garage -- that's why I use wired reed sensors.

I've had this setup for many years (using various editions of Zen16 and Zen17 devices), and it's always been a rock-solid setup.

I use the Zooz garage door app to tie it all togther in one nice dashboard button.

When I lived in Northern Michigan I had Z-Wave relays on each door between the button and operator to simulate a momentary button press. I had wireless tilt sensors on the doors to know if they were open or closed. I ran this for several years before moving to Florida, and the carport instead of garage.

Keep in mind this is not considered safe because there is no warning when the doors may be closed remotely.

For z-wave Zen 16 or 17. $40.00

For zigbee use an MHCozy (they come in multiple channel as well for multi garage doors) $20.00 (for 2 channel)

Ecolink Tilt sensor (latest version uses mercury) $30.00

Optional outdoor keypad (ring gen 2) $50.00

I use a zigbee fingerbot, an old remote fob and a sonoff contact sensor. It's cheap easy (no wiring) and works every time for me.

There are so many devices out there now to integrate pretty much anything.
