Static IP address

Hi all,
Hope you're all well!

Just a random question, how do I set up a static IP address please?
I've connected my Samsung TV to hubitat and all is working, but because I omitted setting a static IP I seem to get occasional connection errors.

I know how to enter the details into my TV and understand that the IP address itself can be almost made up, but what on earth are the other settings? Subnet mask? Gateway? DNS Server?

It's all very confusing.

Thanks for any help!

It sounds like you're asking about how to set a static IP address for a device on your network, not for Hubitat? If you're asking about Hubitat, here is how: Network Setup - Hubitat Documentation. If you're asking about another device, that will depend on the particular device.

IMHO, it's easier to set a DHCP reservation on your router compared to configuring a static IP address on a device. How to do that will vary depending on your router, but visiting its admin page (often an IP address like xxx.xxx.xxx.1, where the xxxs are your regular IP range) usually provides a way to do that by reserving an IP address based on the device's MAC address. Doing this will effectively give the IP a fixed IP address, just not a static one configured on the device, and so your network settings like subnet mask, gateway, etc. will still come automatically to the device from DHCP with no configuration on the device required.

If you do want to set it up on the device instead, you'll need to know these particular details for your network. No one can say for sure without knowing how your network is set up, but your router's admin page will again likely provide clues. The network settings/preferences page in your computer or phone OS will show what you're computer gets for this and might also be a good place to look. For home users, if you have IP automatic IP addresses like 192.168.100.x, your subnet mask is probably 255.255.255.0 (assuming it's just that particular IP range where only "x" varies), your gateway is probably also your router (so 192.168.100.1 or whatever it is--usually .1), and chances are it handles DNS for you too so that can be the same (192.168.100.1). But again, this may vary--you'll need to know your network.

But again, IMHO, reserving an address on the router is easier--but does require some knowledge of how your router's admin interface works. If you know what one you have, perhaps someone here--or elsewhere online if there are support groups dedicated to that--can help.

Either way should technically work and sounds like it might help with your connection to the device if its address keeps changing. Good luck!

Hi there,

What a fantastic reply, literally couldn't have wished for anything better!

You are absolutely correct in assuming it was to set it on a device,
The only automation I use with the TV at the moment is to turn turn off several lights throughout the house when the TV is turned off after certain time ( bed time ).

As I don't use any other automation, the only malfunction I experience is the lights occasionally start turning off. Wasn't sure what was going on initially, but figured out how to check the logs and noticed a connection error on the TV.

Hopefully the static IP ( which I've now assigned, thanks to your help ) will fix that for me.

Thank you!
