As a newbie I am aware that it's important to assign a static IP address to your hubitat. I have an ASUS router but every time I log into the router and go to the LAN DHCP tab, enable manual assignment and then try to enter the data (MAC and IP address) for my C8Pro Hubitat it comes back and tells me that I have entered an invalid IP address -- but one I have checked (and checked several times) that Hubitat reports as the address of my hub.
Curiously, too, the router seems to accept the MAC address I enter but if instead of enterging the MAC address manually I elect the drop-down button it gives me a list of semi-alphabetical names (like "Pixel-7a") and not the numbric MAC address that I can enter. Not sure if that's related.
Also, the address reported by my hub (last two) is 1:220 But the IP starting address reported by my router is 50.2 and the ending sequence is 50.224 How can my HUB report an address that is not in this range and is this the issue? How to fix?
There are two different terms for a "permanent" IP address. One: Static IP usually refers to manually entering data in the device setup (in this case the Hubitat). Two: Reserved Address or DHCP reservation, which is done on the router and sounds like the process you are trying to describe.
The only way I can see your router giving the Hubitat an address that is higher than your range would be if you set up a static IP on the hub and that address was outside the range it hands out. If that were the case, it should not be changing though.
A photo of your current hub setup page and possibly your router setup with the Hub ID, and sensitive data obscured could help (I would possibly show the last two of the MAC for verification that both MAC's are the same). Internal IP's are not sensitive.
Also, is your hub conected by cable or wifi to the router? I believe the C8 Pro has both a cable and a wifi option. They would have different MAC's depending on which way you connect.
No, I didn't assign a static IP on the hub; I just let the hub assign whatever it wanted automatically. I'm attaching a screen shot of the HUB detail tab reporting of just the MAC address and IP addr
ess. Also, I connected the HUB via ethernet cable to the router and a snap of the router setup screen. I can't send a snap of the setup with the Hub ID as you suggest as I don't know where to find it on the router side; I can just see it from the Hubitat side.
maybe there is a bug with the hub not getting an ip on the .1 network.. how are you seeing the hub ip if it is not on the same network as anything else? also did you reboot the hub after plugging it in.. full power down and reboot.
I'll check on the lan not wan question but no, I did not do a hard reboot after plugging it in. I had just plugged it in so what was the need? But I can for sure.
depends if you booted it up after or before plugging it in. if before it may have defaulted to an ip or used the same as the last ip and not tried to pull in a new one.. if it was powerered down at the time than probably not an issue.. you also could try rebooting first the router then the hub.
I think I found my mistake thanks to you all. My ASUS router is connected to the AT&T router/wifi device and I plugged it in to the AT&T router not the ASUS which is what I use for wifi and all else (I have the wifi signal disable on the AT&T device). I'm sure that is why I could see it on the ASUS side. I have connected the hub to the ASUS router now and rebooting.
Again, thanks for the help. The question on ensuing I plugged into wan or lan prompted me to go down and take a closer look. My bad.
