Purchased a new home and included the old hub and all the devices with the sale of the old home. So now I'm on a mission to build new home automation with the latest a greatest.
I'm looking for suggestions on the latest and greatest switches, dimmers, fan controls, sensors, etc... I haven't purchased anything new in quite some time so I'm out of the loop on the latest protocols and technologies.
When I was switching from Insteon I read a lot of messages recommending Lutron Caseta. I decided to go that route and I don't regret it. I have not had a single failed Lutron device in the years I've had it, and I have not seen a single failed command either. It is rock solid, reliable, robust. Only drawback is that they are not cheap. I bought many through deals on new stock on eBay. Anyway, based on my experience, these are what I would recommend.
"Old hub", meaning C5?
I would create a list of all the types of devices defined. Make sure you know how to factory reset if migration fails. Take advantage of the devices that are already installed.
If the devices aren't Z-Wave+ I would put them on the list for replacement.
It also depends on what you want from automation. I have a simpler approach than many. Automatic closet lighting. Notifications if the garage door is open. Simple things. I don't use presence detection. I don't use dimmers and motion detection.
