I know it's not for everyone, but I put a wireless switch (Zooz ZEN34) by the door and turn off the water valve, and in my case, well pump, every time I leave the house.
Now that I'm single, lol, I also turn it off programmatically overnight.
A water leak in the house can do enormous damage, and quickly.
I can see these water flow do-hickeys being useful for irrigation leaks.
I do the same thing. When the alarm is set one of the things that happens is the water valve closes. Water damage is quick to happen and expensive to fix. In Florida mold is also a consideration.
I also have leak sensors scattered around. My bride tests the sensors behind the toilets often when she is cleaning the floors. LOL
I used to do the alarm thing, and it was very convenient, but I'm not doing the Envisilink integration anymore. You do have to remember to turn it on when you come back home though, lol.
I've heard enough stories from acquaintances about damage from domestic water.
I open it when the alarm is is disarmed. I did have to build in some logic in case the dishwasher was running when we left. We never do laundry while gone and I placed the shutoff after the manual main shutoff and the irrigation system so it will continue to function. I feel better having the valve off when we are gone.
That's where I think a flow sensor could help.
With my drip irrigation "system" for the hanging baskets, I put a Zooz Titan valve operator over the ball valve for untreated outside water, and only turn it on, programmatically, when necessary. That Titan valve operator is very easy to install. Thinking of going to plastic flowers this summer, lol.
Thanks @hubitrep, this helps a lot. I was aware the flow meter is passive, but works in conjunction with Sinope valve, or any valve if integrated. Big questions was what kind of data and fidelity can you get from flow sensor outside of it's native app that would allow more fine tuning with rules for smaller leaks than 2L/min. Sounds like that's possible.
For some reason I was thinking it was a closed system, but as you pointed out, it's not. Suppose if you had a controlled valve that closed and then did a pressure test that would be able to find small leaks. Maybe someone will make one
I haven't used Hubitat's Safety Monitor, will need to look into that more. Thanks for alerting me to that.
@Hatallica or @hubitrep, can you please confirm what all is needed from Sinopé to work with hubitat? I believe it's just the zigbee valve and flow sensor, but wasn't sure if anything else is needed such as the gateway?
