BC Hydro has confirmed that my electricity meter has a Zigbee Smart Energy 1.1b connection for local access. Is the Zigbee radio compatiable with SE 1.1b, and has anyone tried or succeeded in connecting HE to a smart utility meter anywhere? I've trawled the net and the closest discussion I can find is from the UK (ironic as so am I..)
BC Hydro does support two gateways, both from Rainforest Energy (Rainforest Store for BC Hydro Customers) and each manual describes sending BC Hydro the hardware MAC address and unique ID to enable access.
This could be an interesting and potentially profitable add for Hubitat if possible as the smart meter market has been exploding and Zigbee SE seems to be the prevalent standard for local access.
There is a more detailed Zigbee Smart Energy spec and outline in the links below. To be frank it is beyond my comprehension but I believe the hardware and frequency are the same as 'regular' Zigbee but that there is a different application profile that would be require to be certified. Any Zigbee specialists out there?
"ZigBee Smart Energy (SE) is the world's leading standard for interoperable wireless products that monitor, control and automate the delivery and use of energy (and other resources, such as water). A wireless network is implemented at the consumer's premises using the ZigBee PRO protocol with the Smart Energy application profile. This Home Area Network (HAN) contains devices such as a Metering Device, In-Premise Display (IPD) and Load Control Device, and is connected to the energy provider using an Energy Service Interface (ESI) via a backhaul network."
"With Zigbee SE it easier to monitor energy consumption and lower the energy costs – for both utilities and the end-user. Zigbee SE is easy to use, because it is interoperable with other Zigbee protocols and works across manufacturers. The standardized protocol provides fast access to new markets for solution providers, and it reduces research costs."
Smart Meter's use ZigBee but it's a variance of ZigBee Pro. The only Automation system out there with real support of them is the ISY from Universal Devices
Hop on their forum and ask around about the ISY and OpenADR and connectivity.
Thanks for that, looks like some good resources to dig into. Do you happen to know if the additional components of Zigbee Pro and SE are hard or software layers?
Generally it is a hardware and software but you can get a ZB Pro that can speak to non pro frequencies but it's a all or none can't exist in both realms and it's a different software stack for the ZCL.
So no the ISY ZigBee unit can't talk to ZHA devices but there is a integration for the ISY to talk to Hubitat but it's currently one way from HE to ISY not from ISY to HE.
Well that really puts a damper on my hopes but had a feeling this was going to be the case. There seem to be more options in the UK as they have mandated much more open access to data, including a usb powered Zigbee SE to wifi gateway stick.
Looks like I'll have to learn to walk before I can run.... Thanks again jeubanks.
