Anyone had luck with smart plugs, with sense and Hubitat?
I’ve had my Sense Energy monitor for over 2 years, and it’s been a mediocre experience. It’s nice to see real time what my house is using, and if I turn on a big draw item the usage pop up in near real time, but the always on device identification has been poor. It shows 48% of my usage (575w and $850 a year) is always on, but not identified. I’d like to understand that more.
I have each one attached to most all bigger (and some smaller) appliances.
I then use this app Averaging - #104 by bravenel To combine all the energy usages to a monthly cumulative total.
I compare what my electric bill says I used versus the energy sum app, and after a couple months can get a pretty basic estimation of what my "always on" usage is with other devices not being monitored by the plugs.
with sense. I take it if you integrate with sense, you can’t integrate with Hubitat?
That’s not correct. I have 8 Kasa plugs integrated with Sense and also with Hubitat. Both integrations are local and do not require the plugs to be connected to the Sense cloud.
There is also this option of you have a bunch of "incompatible" plugs and a HomeAssistant hub up and running. I haven't tried it yet, but considering it.
These actually record total watt-hours, and not just watts, don't they? That way you can just poll and reset the value once per day/week/month? Seems like that could be better than the traffic generated from instantaneous power reporting and provide more useful information.
That's due to the fact that Sense primarily identifies devices by their waveform signature when they turn on and off. Most devices that are always on just draw a steady current and that makes it hard to distinguish them from each other. You can improve its detection and recognition by manually turning those devices on and off several times so it can see and learn their individual signatures.
The Zooz Double Plug has this same energy reporting feature at a lower cost, but some users have seen their zwave meshes go to garbage if they have more than one paired to the hub.
There is a reason they are cheaper. I will not waste anymore money on zooz products, almost everything I have purchased zooz has become defective. 5x Power strips, 2 different model motion sensors 6 total sensors Several hundreds of dollars, all inoperable.
I've had these Fibaro switches over 3 years and haven't had a single issue with one of them
I’ve also had problems with Zooz. While I’m ‘thrifty’, the ROi on me spending time troubleshooting/returning stuff eats up the $5-10 I save per device pretty quick.
