Has anyone figured out how to control smart bulbs from a Jasco smart switch? I've got a single bulb wired to a jasco dimmer that I recently added a sengled bulb to for color. I'd like to have the switch just stay hot all the time and pass the paddle commands to the bulb. I've got a decent idea on how to control the bulb from the switch, but I can't figure out how to disable the local relay. Is there anyway to do that in Hubitat?
I suppose I could wire the switch shut and replace it with a zooz remote, but I'm trying to avoid that if I can do this in software for free.
In theory, but very likely against code (and probably a bad idea in general) you could rewire the switch so that line and load are both tied together on the line terminal. In other words, the power wire to the light becomes hot at all times. The switch would then send commands to the hub, but wouldn't have any outputs to control.
Again, do this at your own risk, I am not endorsing this method.
I think code wants you to be able to cut power to the circuit for bulb changes. I.E. someone touching a broken bulb or inadvertently touching the exposed electrical socket. Probably less of an issue with plastic LED bulbs, but something to be aware of.
That is why most dimmers have that tab on the switch, to comply with code as smart dimmers don't truly turn off like a physical switch.
Hmm ya. I think the "proper" solution here might be an Inovelli switch that allows for local relay disable. However, I'm trying to think of one instance in my life where I was concerned that the switch was on when changing a bulb
Not sure what Zooz has on sale currently, but I would watch before rushing out and buying anything. They often have some really great sales a few times a year, and their weekly specials of course.
I can't remember which models have "smart bulb mode" I don't think they all do, so check the specs before ordering.
Update: installed the zooz switch. As others stated - it's literally designed for this use case. You can disable relay control both from paddle and zwave command. It still reports state, but the relay is always powered on. I created a hubitat device binding between the bulb and switch so that the paddle will operate the bulb and it works great (even dimming works). Thanks!
Physically, the zooz switches are almost identical to the Jasco switches so they look fine next to one another on the wall. The LED is a little dimmer (a plus imo) and also the brightness is configurable. I also like how ramp level and min/max brightness can be configured. I dare say these are better switches all around than the Jascos I just installed 40
