Search by device id

Today, while tracking an issue - I noted a weakness in HE logs search.
Since the logs use 'Dev:xxx' (the device number) I want to show only that device in the logs. When I search for the device number - no results.
In my image below - for example - I have app created devices such as dev:80. I I try to 'search' for device 80 I get 'not found'. I have to know the device name.
The search component should allow to search by the device number OR it's name -

As you can see 'dev:80' returns nothing.

and the cute drop down shows 'not found'

You can already do this: that is what "Filter" does.

You can click the device in the log entry to filter to just that device (or app). It will also highlight the device or app in the list across the top.

um. prolly just the explanation is hard to understand - filter is useless if I don't already know the name. no sense in arguing this tho - I constantly remind myself I'm not here to improve HE... just get the most I can out of it.

Have you tried clicking on the device number in the log entry (which is what I think @sburke781 was saying above)

Doesn't that do exactly what you're trying to accomplish by typing the device number into the filter box?

While 'filter is useless' may be true as far as using the filter box, there is a one-click way of filtering on any device in the log, which is quicker than clicking in the filter box and typing "dev:80".

Or click on the Info link (or Warn/Err link) to be directly taken to that device.

Are we sure we want the UI/UX to match the Mind of JShimota ?

I wouldn't want the UI/UX to match the Mind of CSteele, I already recognize how scary that would be.

very cute response! as always - I ask myself, why does everyone choose to 'discuss' a feature request?

Ha - when it comes to delinquent minds, I got you all beat. Just ask my students.

Because you are making a pitch to have developers spend time on your idea. The time competes with features and fixes that the rest of us would like to see. Therefore, a little debate is appropriate.

There can often be an alternative way to achieve the same outcome, so it can be useful to point them out to see if they would satisfy what someone is requesting.

oh - you mean lobbying - debate? HA

This.

Maybe the feature already exists and the person just aren't aware, which happens fairly often. Perhaps the feature has been asked for previously, in which case someone could be referred to the older request thread. In many cases, the feature request needs fine tuning or clarification as to what is being requested.

There are many reasons to discuss a feature request.

In my opinion this was unnecessary.

I haven't used that search in a while, so I tried a few different things.

Search works great if you have the slightest inkling of what you are looking for. For example I typed in "Lock" and it brought up a whole bunch of entries. I also tried more specific requests, like "front door" and that displayed what I was searching for.

The search did fail when I typed in the device number, but who goes by that? I can remember the name of the device much easier than device 5014 or whatever that lock is called. And like you and others pointed out, just click on the number in the first column if you really want to sort by numbers.

The search also failed when I searched for "Warn" but there is the selection box at the top for "Level" which handles this.

I would say the search works as I expected it to. Much better results than Google search nowadays! That is a worthless search engine in 2023.

I should have said

"While 'filter is useless may be true as far as using the filter box in this specific use case".

It is certainly not useless when using it to do things that it actually does, like search the text of the log entries.

Some users’ feature requests more than others.

If I remember correctly we have tried that and it deemed the search ineffective due to the numeric characters. I can see how searching for a device id may help in some use cases, so maybe we will try again. Thanks for your feedback.
