Set up New Scene, and saved, setup another new scene, and both have the "ID??" of "Scene-1.2". Then neither scene will load from menu ... just forever " Please wait, loading app Scene-1.2 ." message. Seems buggy. Other parts of web interface work (Devices, etc.)
Scenes isn't used anymore. Groups and scenes are but you're better off using Room Lighting for everything including scenes
Are you on the latest platform release? Check Settings > Hub Details. Version 2.3.4.117 is the latest as of my writing this. You've noticed a couple odd things based on your recent posts that sound like the were addressed a while back, this being one.
I'm also not sure what you mean with "ID," but it sounss like you might mean the app display name/label. You'll be offered to create a custom name for your scene upon creation (so this default name normally won't happen), and you can also open it any time to change it after the fact. But that depends on it actually saving, which it sounss like you're having trouble with. You will still see "Scene-1.2" in some places, as that is the internal name of the app itself, but only in things like the app status page (not somewhere you normally need to go) or the "Type" column in the apps list.
Scenes (the child app) are part of Groups and Scenes. They were all "un-deprecated" a while back. Room Lighting is, of course, certainly a viable replacement regardless; some people just had a harder time figuring out setup.
Ahh I thought way back it was scenes before groups and scenes. (I was thinking he was on a much older platform)
Respectfully, "Scenes isn't used anymore. Groups and scenes are but you're better off ", do you understand how insane this sounds ? It's as if there was zero product planning, no UXD person and developers just change functions on a whim. If the update would actually load ... I would use it, but I am inclined to throw away the significant time I have spent trying to learn this device and the firmware as it just doesn't appear design (or code) stable. So, for reference, you DON'T change functionality in a minor dot level (i.e. 2.2,x to 2.4.x), it's a BIG NO NO in the industry.
The quote mentioned is not in my post that you replied to, but I did provide clarification. Regardless, what you are complaining about was never the case: even when they were deprecated, it did not affect existing installs (it was just no longer available for new use, an attempt to simplify--but some found the replacement less simple, and the change was reverted, so this whole point is moot). It is very rare that anything previously working has been removed or stop working (see: Rule Machine Legacy in the face of Rule 5.x, among other examples).
So, I'm not sure this is an accurate reflection of reality, but sorry for any confusion that the lesson on platform history may have caused. ![]()
Second, Hubitat's version numbering is a bit different from what you are assuming. A change from 2.2.3.x to 2.2.4.x is effectively a "major" release, and the difference between 2.2.9 and 2.3.0 is similar 2.3.0 to 2.3.1 -- perhaps to keep the important parts of the version number under 10 and easier to write. There has never been a 2.4.x release (yet?) as in your post, but perhaps you mean 2.3.4, which is the latest "major" version. (I'm using this in quotes so as to not imply semantic versioning, which this is not quite, though they did jump from 1.x to 2.x a while back, with significant UI changes that could have affected apps with highly customized UIs.)
So you're trying to use Settings > Check for Updates and have, but it won't install? I don't see anything in your previous posts about this, but someone could likely help if you provided more information.
After 9 tries, was finally able to get 2.3.4.117 loaded and booted up. Thanks for the help and patience.
Can someone briefly list pros / cons / capabilities of Scenes (the Groups and Scenes variety, which seems still present in patch#117) vs "Room Lighting", and perhaps the hierarchy. It would appear that Room Lighting is just another layer from the title in Room Lighting:
(" Create Room Lights from Group, Scene or Scene Transition
Select Group, Scene or Scene Transition") ?
P.S. I now understand that Hubitat is different from the software industry standard release/version numbering, which for almost 3 decades, has been major#.minor#.revision#.patch#. Thanks for explaining. I can only assume original developers were EE's, and missed the software engineering class they would have benefited from.
The fact that you had such a hard time upgrading, I wonder if you had some corruption in your database. (The newer platform uses a new database system)
I am guessing this might be the case, and perhaps explains a lot of my initial problems. Fingers crossed. The time invested will be worth it if it is sorted out now.
Thanks rlithgow1, Room Lighting does seem to be what I was looking for. I was initially confused by the comment that Scenes are not used anymore. I think this is due to changes in the product and perhaps it coming into maturity. For Hubitat, I reccommend a hierarchical drawing of this, as Lighting may be the place that a large percentage of new and perhaps non technical users start.
Oh man, I have to say - I agree this should be the industry standard. In my experience however a lot of the projects I've been involved with the dev "standards" and Q&A has generally been lacking at worst or inconsistent at best. More like the Wild West.. especially after delivery. Every lead thinks they know the optimal "way" of doing things.. almost as bad as the non-standard coding styles and the "just get it done" + buzzwords mentality of management.
(I know not ALL shops are like this)
Apologies for dipping off topic a bit..
To ensure your database is free of corruption, go to settings>>backup and restore.
Scroll to the botoom and click download so your database downloads to your pc.
Go to yourhubip:8081 and click soft reset. Upon reboot it will prompt you to restore, pick the database you saved to your pc. You now have a clean hub.
