Samsung Smartthings motion sensors not reporting battery level

All my motion sensors are Samsung Smartthings motion sensors v3. Using the "Generic Zigbee Motion Sensor" driver.

Some are not reporting battery level properly, whilst others are.

Eg:

This one doesn't seem to report correctly:

Name Value Unit Description Text Source Type Date
battery 87 % Boot room motion sensor battery is 87% DEVICE 2019-02-21 03:51:06.279 AM GMT
battery 100 Generic Zigbee Motion Sensor battery is 100% DEVICE 2018-12-05 08:00:33.332 PM GMT

The battery ran out today, replaced the battery, but no report of battery level being at 100%. Note how the last battery level report was in February last year. It has been reporting temperature properly.

This one reports correctly, battery also replaced, but last week:

Name Value Unit Description Text Source Type Date
battery 99 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 99% DEVICE 2020-01-09 05:03:52.326 PM GMT
battery 100 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 100% DEVICE 2020-01-07 11:42:13.439 PM GMT
battery 12 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 12% DEVICE 2019-12-29 10:15:28.270 AM GMT
battery 24 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 24% DEVICE 2019-12-27 01:44:06.333 PM GMT
battery 37 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 37% DEVICE 2019-12-25 02:10:39.507 PM GMT
battery 49 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 49% DEVICE 2019-12-24 02:54:09.464 PM GMT
battery 62 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 62% DEVICE 2019-12-16 12:24:14.581 PM GMT
battery 75 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 75% DEVICE 2019-11-30 05:58:34.577 PM GMT
battery 87 % Kitchen motion sensor battery is 87% DEVICE 2019-07-16 05:24:55.232 PM BST
battery 100 Kitchen motion sensor battery is 100% DEVICE 2018-12-06 08:24:08.290 PM GMT

I'm seeing the same behaviour in my other Samsung Smartthings motion sensors too. Any ideas why some report the battery level correctly and others don't?

This is a common problem with many brands of sensors. Sometimes it has to do with the that particular battery. Sometimes it's a wonkey device. the battery level reported by these devices should never be trusted 100%.

My old smartthings brand devices have been the most unreliable on battery measurements.. Even before I moved them to HE

I bought them all at the same time, and they all have the same battery brand in them, as shipped by Samsung.

I don't expect them to be reliable on the actual level, but it seems odd that some are not reporting any battery info for almost a whole year, whilst everything else is fine.

It is not unsurprising to me at all. These are not battery meters. Remember, the battery that is being measured is the one supplying the power to the circuit doing the measuring. It can't be accurate 100% of the time.
