Root cellar - temperature sensor and automated damper

Hi! I am new to all this and am finding it a bit overwhelming. I am interested in building a root cellar in the basement, and ideally would be able to view the temperature fluctuations over time (like temperature reports every 3 hours or so-- humidity readings would also be a plus).

I also want to put in an automated damper to control cool air supply from outside. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to start with these? Temperature could get pretty cold so ideally a battery pack or power supply could be on the outside of the insulated enclosure.

Thank you!

I have done this for a slightly different use case. I purchased an inline fan and an inline damper that connect to 4" duct work (think dryer vent). The fan and the damper are both 110vAC so I control them with zigbee outlets. Whole thing works great. I have humidity and temperature sensors throughout. Right now there is no automation, only remote control. But the automation part is simple once you have the stuff in place.
