Yes, the documentation is hard. There needs to be clear instructions on how to configure a very basic automation that will work repeatedly without fail, and then build on that for expanded functionality.
The root problem here is that those in the community who find this application powerful and useful are likely experienced in ladder logic and/or other programatic functionality (and there is significant difference between the two), and for them, little explanation is necessary. However, if Hubitat had to rely on just those folks for their customer base they would likely never be profitable.
Either the documentation needs to be better or the application needs to be offered in a more basic iteration. I get it that this application has been built on top of 2 or 3 previous applications, and that historically, everyone had to (and some still are) build these rules from scratch in Basic Rules and RM and even combinations with other lighting apps.
As Edge drivers were rolled-out, ST tried to go the route of doing away with their Smart Lighting app and force users to build everything from scratch, and the outcry forced them to bring Smart Lighting back. Or at least that was my perception, as I had come to a point of satisfaction with my ST installation and was really not much involved during 2020-2023. Somehow, ST managed to not break anything but my X10 integration running on Red Node/Heyu. Now I'm here on HE because I want to integrate RF into my HA, yet I'm a hack at best with this stuff and it doesn't come easy for me.
I commend the HE developers for such a powerful application as RL, but the documentation is crippling it for all but the brightest users. How do I know? Just look at the number of people who replied to this post, as well as other recent posts about RL, that have no surety about what all RL does or can do.
