I have a RM 5.1 rule to change the color temperature and dim some Hue lights at a certain time each day.

The rule triggers at 7:30pm, the lights begin changing CCT and dimming appropriately. At around 7:37pm all of the lights turn fully off for 10 seconds then come back on and continue changing CCT and dimming correctly.

The lights are being sent an Off and then On command in the middle of the dimming. The logs for the RM rule look correct.

I should have included, when I delete this rule the lights stay on. There is no other rule or automation turning them off, in Hubitat or Hue.

It's interesting that the off/on time is also 10 seconds... same as your 10 second interval time. Certainly not a solution... but observable.

Does every device also show this off/on event in their respective logs?

Go to one of your affected devices.. and view the "Events" instead of the "Logs". There, you should be able to find more info about WHAT is commanding that off/on event.

Definitely check the events page for one of your affected devices like @joshlobe suggested. I'm guessing it is probably from the Hue Hub. Assuming all of those are Hue lights, I strongly recommend you create a Hue Zone with all them, and bring the Zone into Hubitat. This way you can just command the Hue Zone and let the Hue Bridge use its Group Messaging. I'm guessing that there is so much data going back and forth between the lights, Hue Bridge, and Hubitat, that it probably got misinterpreted at some point. Using a Hue Zone in Hubitat will greatly help with this rule.

Just an Off and On command. I don't see anything that shows what process originated these commands.

As I said, If I delete this rule the lights stay on. There is nothing else turning them on/off that I can see.

I created a Hue Zone for these lights and have imported it into Habitat as a "Hue Group". Should I also enable "Prefer V2 Hue API"? I have a V2 Hue bridge.

I recall Robert mentioning some potential gotcha's with Hue Groups in past discussions, but I didn't pay close attention since I don't use any.

Where? I don't see any commands except setColorTemperature. They would have "command" in the type column. I only see events. These are pretty boring if you already know what happened, as they should just reflect that but won't tell you anything about why.

Something else has to be doing this. The question would be figuring out what. Do you use Alexa and have the Alexa Hunches feature not disabled, to name one possibility? With no commands for the device from the hub, it strongly suggests something external. But another possibility is that (if these are lights) it was a command to the group (room or zone) device, even on the hub. Check those, too, if you have any.

Enabling debug logging for the devices in question would give you more details about what commands are actually being sent (not just what and when), so that would be another suggestion. Direct copy/paste of logs is normally pretty hard to read, so I'd suggest a screenshot or formatting that better matches the output to eliminate that difficulty.

Only thing I can think of is that users with a Hue integration from setup from 2018 may have found all lights responding to group commands instead of just the specified group. This will be fixed for new upgrades in 2.4.1 and has an easy but manual fix for existing 2.4.0 users if needed. To see if your group is affected, look at the Device Network ID (DNI) and see if it still contains "hueGroup:", in which case, it is. This wouldn't apply to a new group created on 2.4.0, as it sounds like the above is, and it wouldn't be the problem originally described, but I suppose it's worth looking at...

Nothing else is doing this. As I have said several times in this thread, if I remove this rule the lights stay on. There is nothing else, internal or external, turning the lights off.

I am not using a Hue Group, the rule controls the individual devices. A recommendation up-thread was to use a Hue Zone, not to control individual devices, so I created one for testing but haven't implemented it yet.

Can you do so with a virtual device? That would leave any reporting the Hue devices do out of the question. (With the V1 API as the OP was originally using, this would only come in via polling or after a seemingly successful command to the device -- so it should be accurate but something else could be happening.)

Without an "off" (or "on") command sent by the rule, which the event history for this specific device proves, I'm not sure there is any reason to suggest this RM action is at fault.

To be clear, I understand that this is what you believe, and I believe that the behavior you describe is is what is happening. :slight_smile: I am just saying that often, there turns out to be something else at play. Any of the above troubleshooting steps can help figure that out more. Good luck!

There is no Alexa, I don't Alexa or have any Google devices with Alexa. No Smartthings or HA or other controllers. Only Habitat and Hue. I do have an AppleTV that acts as a "Home" hub but no automations on that at all. There were no Hue groups imported to the Habitat hub. No zone or group control, only individual devices.

I'm happy to test how "something else at play" can be turning these lights off ONLY when this rule exists but not when it doesn't. Given the above, what do you suggest?

It is curious that another person has replicated this behavior.

Try re-saving -- because I don't see the actual "debug" log entries I'd expect here (keep in mind also that, by default, this auto-disables after 30 minutes and that the values you see on the screen for any preference are only valid as of the time of page load).

Debug logs for any possible device (light, group, possibly the bridge) would be my suggestion. :slight_smile: That will show you any commands going out as well as raw data coming in that gets processed into events (though still no indication as to why that is happening).

There could be something with RM, and the ability to reproduce the behavior is suspicious, but events without a command seem odd if it's indeed coming from the hub, as there shouldn't be any other way to do that (from the hub). The virtual device test above is even odder, since that appears to be some problem but not the same one. I'll see if I can test anything myself later.

Another thing you can to do rule out a rule or any app is to try the commands directly yourself from the device detail page to see what happens -- and, also important for this rule action (since it needs to calculate its steps based on both your desired end state and the current values), what "Current States" on the same page reflect any time afterwards.

Thanks -- those logs are helpful. And that's interesting! At 4:06:12.530, the "off()" method in the driver was logged as running. Usually, this is because the command itself was run. But it is also internally called (in this particular set of drivers; others may vary) if you do a "setLevel()" to level 0.

Neither of those exactly look like they're happening, but it could easily be a result of something with that "setColorTemperature()" command, as it is immediately before and also contains a level (although not zero and seemingly affected only for some specific value or values, certainly not all or every step of this change would do the same...).

You can verify that no "off" command was explicitly sent by doing the same as above, looking at "Events" on the device detail page/flyout for this device and looking only at rows with a "Type" of "command" (so commands, not actual events). Verify that "command-off" was never called by anything, including this rule, in that history table.

I would love to think you'd find it, because that would make the solution easy (addressing the problem in the calling app). I suspect you won't and there is something odd going on here that I'll dig into the driver to figure out. :slight_smile:

I've figured out what's going on here: "0" has an ASCII value of 48, and the check for zero here is overly broad/sensitive (and no longer necessary since it doesn't get to this point in the code unless it's already been converted to a number). So, that's why it's calling "off()" -- it thinks you did a level of zero!

This will be fixed in 2.4.1.

For now in 2.4.0, a few workarounds include:

  • Using the "Set Color Temperature" command (or an action that calls this same command) in Rule Machine directly with a transition time to slowly fade, rather than the "over time" action that makes repeated calls with new calculated values each time -- will only work with transition times low enough that the API accepts, but they don't say what the max actually is (10 minutes like in your original post might be a little high, but you can see how far it lets you go and still works...)
  • Changing level separately from CT, as this is specific to "Set Color Temperature" (and possibly "Set Color"), though normally I'd recommend as few commands as possible
  • Trying your best to make the math likely to avoid level 48 (more likely with smaller intervals)
  • Dealing with the fact that it will only happen, if it does at all, for one particular step before turning back on :slight_smile:
