Ring Keypad Buttons Not Working

I have read so much here on the ring keypad my eyes are red.

When I go to devices>ring keypad and press any arm/disarm buttons, the keypad responds but the HSM status does not change on the dashboard.

When I enter my code and press a button, no response from the keyboard or the hubitat dashboard.

I've done all the reset, shut off, delete, repair, remove, pair again...enough things to make my head spin.

I knew hubitat wasn't going to be super simple but I didn't think it would be this frustrating.

Maybe I expect too much but I expected a document saying: follow these steps and now you can press keys on the keypad and hubitat will respond.

Did I miss the documentation on the ring keypad? Is there a link for that?

I'm about ready to go back to ADT. They just offered me $30 a month for life to come back.

There's a lot of discussion about using HSM as a replacement for a traditional alarm system. My opinion, and it is just an opinion, is that I like a separate alarm system built for that purpose and monitored by a professional alarm company. Then I integrate it with HSM so I can manipulate and extend the alarm system functionality with HE. That kind of integration is not available for every alarm panel and it is not always a good project for someone just starting their HE journey but it gives you a lot of flexibility in exchange for those red eyes.

I'm gonna assume you're trying to connect the Ring keypads directly to HE, not to a Ring alarm system and then via the Ring integration to HE... either way works but the configuration options are quite a bit different. I use Ring gen 2 keypads to arm and disarm HSM directly (no Ring security system) and it works fine. Have you specifically configured them in HSM? If not, open up the HSM app, find this configuration item (yours will obviously have different details)...

If you click on it, there are a bunch of options for arming and disarming that appear. You want this one:

If you're using the built-in driver I believe you have to actually punch in your code and then hit the appropriate arm button. There's a community-based driver out there that allows one-touch arming.

As for documentation, there is some at this link Hubitat® Safety Monitor - Hubitat Documentation. It needs a bit of updating and contains only a passing reference to keypads. However since HE doesn't make the Ring keypad and there are many keypads you can use with HE, the documentation is likely to be more generic rather than specific to Ring. After all there are literally thousands of pieces of equipment that can be used with HE. Documenting them all would be a full time job for a pretty big group of people! Likewise since Ring makes its own security systems it's unlikely they'd provide documentation for configuring HSM. It can be frustrating, I know... that's one of the hurdles with a DIY solution.

Thanks I will go over the documentation and see if that helps but the fact that it needs updating is another blow to my confidence in hubitat. We are moving to a new house tomorrow so this will have to wait a few days. Thanks...I'll be back.

Congrats on the new house! I've had three home automation systems, Wink, ST, and HE. This is by far the most flexible and best supported. This community is awesome - it far outweighs any documentation that may need to be updated. Just go slow, take some time to get used to the platform, ask questions... you'll be fine.

Had I read those before jumping right in I would have saved myself a bunch of aggravation.

@user911 were you able to confirm if you had configured HSM correctly?

I've just installed two Ring keypads and they were working brilliantly until they weren't. I was able to arm/disarm using the keypads and the keypad arm status would update instantaneously if HSM was armed/disarmed from elsewhere.

Until last night.

Both pads were completely unresponsive to arm/disarm commands at the keypad. But they were both connected to HT just fine and if I sent a command directly to the keypad device (e.g. 'disarm') they came back to life.

I have two Ring Gen2 Keypads and have not been able to get the Keypad Entry function to work. I can change the Arm status all day long using the Device Buttons in HE. I have also tried with and without the special Drivers code. By entering the "code" and pressing the AWAY or HOME buttons on the keypad it does nothing. When armed from the HE and trying same to "disarm" from the Keypad.... nothing. Can anybody provide some guidance..... this is the second brand of keypad that does not work fully for me. I can get the Centralite Keypad to change ARM status from the keypad, but then it does strange things when using the HSM........ I really need a keypad to complete my system

Was able to resolve this issue with advice from conversation titled "Ring keypad v2" cleaning out ghost z-waves and using SmartStart function to include the keypad.

Last year I converted a Honeywell / Ademco alarm system to the Konnected system with HE. I used a fire tablet as my main interface using Fully Kiosk and HE dashboards. So far the main portion of the project has been pretty rock-solid. I have made several attempts to get a Gen 2 Fire keypad to work reliably as a secondary control and monitor point. I have wasted loads of time trying various configurations with not much luck. Sometimes it will work for a while, then it has some sort of issue.

Are there better options out there for keypads (or a complete changeout) that can provide stability and future-proof flexibility? I love to tinker with the system but I really need stability and ease of use for the rest of the fam.

aside... I am still operating a portion of the house on the ISY Universal Devices. It has been very stable for years... My plan has been to phase out the Insteon devices over the coming months.

I still cannot get the HSM to respond to the keypad.
The keypad does respond to the HSM buttons in the dashboard.
The keypad does respond to mode changes that change HSM via a Thirdreality button controller.

I removed the keypad.
No ghosts.
Much to my dismay, I jumped through all the stupid hoops to get the ring app on my phone so I could use smart start and don't see the keypad anywhere in the list of devices to add from the app.
So I paired it using the hubitat pairing and it paired up fine.
Still, pressing the keys does nothing.

The list of keypads that work with hubitat is pretty slim as well as the keyfobs.

I programmed a thirdreality button controller so at least my husband can disarm and re-arm going out the door but he'll probably lose the button controller and there is no pin for it.

Any suggestions on a keypad that works well with hubitat? I'm a bit sketchy on community drivers so any comments about them are appreciated too--like how reliable are they?

Thanks for all the help. I just now got back into hubitat since some life things happened in between the move date and now.

 Hehe!! Finally got the Ring Gen2 keypad working back AND forth so when I enter the pin and push the keypad buttons, HSM responds. So two-way communication.

For other newbies reading this:

First misunderstanding was that I needed the ring app to install the keypad with smart start. Finally saw a youtube video that showed Smart Start is a Hubitat app accessible through the Hubitat phone app. Duh.

I had tried simply pairing via the hub but that never worked. Tried it many times.

Then started over and this is what I did:

  • Removed the keypad from being used by HSM.
  • Removed the keypad from Devices (Forced Remove)
  • Made sure it wasn't still in Settings: System Settings: Z-Wave Details
  • Did a reset on the Z-Wave Details page but only because this is my only Z-Wave device so no harm
  • Shut down the hub from Settings: System Settings: Shutdown.
  • Unplugged the hub.
  • Waitied 5 minutes.
  • Right before plugging the hub back in, I reset the keypad by holding the reset button for 20 seconds.
  • Plugged the hub back in.
  • Saw that it was paired in the phone app.

So these steps are also in another thread but just in case somebody lands here first, this is how it worked for me.

I was about ready to give up on this ring gen2 keypad but glad I stuck with it.

I just got a Ring Keypad 2. No problems pairing. I can send commands to the keypad and it responds. But as mentioned by others when I try to get anything from the keypad it doesn't work. I have been thru all the steps listed above several times. But to no avail.

I do get this in the logs,
