Ring Cameras - Setting my expectations

So, today I got email about how my "Ring Devices are Brand New." This basically pushed the no-cloud angle, along with some performance improvements and integration with my smart home.

Cool. Sounds good.

What about history recordings? I can't find any mention of that and it does sound a bit dubious. Recordings are one of the main things I like having about the Ring camera. Video of sloppy package delivery, dubious visitors to my door, animal visitors, etc.

Does the C-8 Pro manage that as well? I have multiple servers on my network with terabytes of storage, and I can imagine a product that might record them for me there.

However, off-site storage of home security video is a big plus for cloud-based security.

Does the Hubitat integration of Ring replace, or work alongside the Ring Cloud functionality if I want it to?

Looks like it just integrates with the Ring Cloud API, similar to how SmartThings or Alexa would integrate with it.

So it doesn't actually eliminate any of the issues with hosting in the cloud then?

From the beta thread it appears it uses the cameras for motion sensing, doorbell presses and the like, not video streaming or anything. At least yet.

The email sure does make it seem like it would allow full local control of the devices with no internet connection. But the beta thread points the other way.

It’s a welcome addition, but won’t replace something like homebridge or scrypted yet.

The beta thread is accurate.

100% this. As you pointed out, it can bring in motion or doorbell events to be used for Hubitat automations. And those automations could be used to control a Ring floodlight, or a device directly connected to Hubitat.

Yep - I was excited for a moment there, installed it on my test hub and then realized that I would still need Homebridge for video in Apple Home.... so I'm going to hold off on this for now :frowning:. I have other motion sensor paired with HE that I use for triggering automations.
