I'm thinking of getting a Ring alarm system to integrate with my Hubitat C8. I watched a video on how to setup the Ring and it requires an ethernet connection to the router (Which I don't have room currently). Anyway, I guess you setup the Ring alarm system and components as usual over Wifi. Then afterwards integrate them with the Hubitat?
The reason I ask is that I have two Ring motion sensors integrated with my HE, and there is no Wifi involved, just a Z-wave connection.
If you get Ring Alarm, you will get their alarm base station. After the base station is setup, then the community integration can be used to connect it to Hubitat.
You will need to decide if your 2 sensors should be directly connected to Hubitat or Ring via Z-Wave.
If they are directly connected to Hubitat via Z-Wave, Ring will not see them.
If they are directly connected to Ring via Z-Wave, then the integration will allow you to see them in Hubitat.
Keep in mind that the community integration is not supported, so if Ring changes something in their setup, it could stop working. Until someone is able to resolve this, or forever if it cannot be resolved by one of the community members.
Can you recommend a better more compatible alarm system option than Ring then? I saw that there were a lot of Ring device drivers and thought it was a good choice.
Also, can you tell me if you need a Ring subscription for any of the Hubitat integration to work? I just read that you need a Ring subscription in order for it to work with Alexa. Bummer! I read this at Amazon:
Better with Alexa. Arm and disarm Ring Alarm with your voice with a Ring Protect Plan (subscription required, sold separately).
Not sure what video you watched but ethernet is not required. Mine is on WiFi.
If you want to be able to use voice via Alexa (and the integration) you would need to have at least the basic plan. The upside to the standard and premium plans is that you get cell backup. So if you internet is down you still have access to the alarm remotely. And of course if you want a system with professional monitoring than you would the whole system and a subscription.
If you are trying to stay completely local than you wouldn't need the base station and would just get the devices (which would not require them to be ring) and directly connect them to HE. Just like you have with the motion sensors. Use the HSM app and HE is now the base station. Not sure if anyone is using HSM and able to send voice commands but I would assume you could setup Alexa with virtual devices and rules to have voice commands arm, disarm, etc.
This is another one of those "how critical is the system". Personally, I am more concerned with the security, alarming and emergency services (especially when I am away), over the system being local and part of my automation. I use the integration for a few things but again nothing critical.
I really like Ring as a security solution. Their price was much more reasonable than the other options I had looked at when I purchased their solution.
I really tend to dislike subscriptions models, however, Like @CaptWoody, mentions above, they do offer a good cell backup option which Iโm ok paying for along with their monitoring, at the price they currently offer the service.
As for it working or not without the subscription, I donโt know for sure, but suspect that it would work, and integrate with Hubitat subscription or not, as long as it has an internet connection and that you are able to see the states and also arm/disarm without one.
Remember that Hubitat is a great home automation solution, but not a security system.
Have you made a study of the Abode security system? Natively their sensors are on 433Mhz but their upper tier base Hub also has basic support for z-wave and zigbee devices. They have their CUE automation in which one may create basic automations. Simular to Google Assistant. Pales in comparison to HE though. One may subscribe to their monitoring service which adds Cellular backup if desired.
I'm not inclined to subscribe for security. I formerly subscribed to SimplySafe's plan, but dropped that years ago. I live in a very low crime area. What I would like to do is if an alarm is detected, is to send me a notification. I'd also like to be able to arm the alarm using voice commands. But they all seem to require a subscription and cloud connectivity for that.
Thanks for the info, I'll probably stick with my HE incompatible SimplySafe system.
Thanks for the info. I mainly wanted to be able to send myself a notification if a sensor was triggered. And used voice commands to arm it, but evidently that is not an option unless you have a subscription. It's the same with my SimplySafe system, no voice control without a subscription. I thought that perhaps the HE Alexa integration would allow for voice control.
