Replaced C7 with C8 pro, can I leave the C7 as a relay?

I just replaced a C7 with a C8 pro (latest software
2.4.3.149),
I am having some issues with a couple of Zigbee outlets that don't respond or respond when they want, I have a couple of loratap repeaters but they don't seem to help.
my question is, can I wipe the C7 and place it near the problem outlet and use it as a mesh repeater for the rest of the network?
Is there a better way to do this?

thanks,

Sam

I have a C8-Pro and C7, and use them somewhat similarly...

C8-Pro: All my Z-Wave, about 1/3 of Zigbee
C7: 2/3 of Zigbee, including devices that don't seem to play wall on the C8-Pro

I share Zigbee devices on C7 back to C8-Pro via hub mesh.

Make sure you aren't using the same Zigbee channel on both hubs, and it's generally preferable to higher channel numbers to stay away from your home's 2.4ghz Wi-Fi channels (general rec is to put Wi-Fi on the lower Wi-Fi channels). I use Zigbee channel 15 on the C8-Pro and 25 on the C7. General advice is not to use 20 on the C8-Pro for Zigbee as there have been some consistent issues for some users who use 20 for C8-Pro Zigbee. Others are using channel 20 fine, but if you can avoid it on the C8-Pro probably best way to go "just in case."

If you aren't using Z-Wave on the C7 you can disable the Z-Wave radio on the Z-Wave Details page.

Have you tried bumping up the Zigbee radioโ€™s transmit power a little? It comes set to 8, but can go all the way up to 20 in 4 db increments. My C-8 has been set to 16 pretty much since the hub was released and has shown incredible stability. You could also try adding a couple of the Sonoff Zigbee USB outlet switches. With @kkossev โ€™s driver you can turn on turbo mode which increases the zigbee power to 12. They are equipped with the same zigbee chip as the hub, and are proving to be very good repeaters.

Good point!

FWIW I'm using 12. Tried 8 and 16 and I think 20 and for me best results were w/12. More power can result in more interference so higher power isn't necessarily always the best.

The Hubitat Hub is a ZigBee Coordinator and not able to be used as a ZigBee Repeater in your ZigBee Mesh.

But as mentioned you can use it with the built in Hubitat Hub Mesh to separate out troublesome devices.

And moving ZigBee devices between hubs is quite simple with Swap Device.

Same setup here except 1/3 zigbee on C7 and the rest on the C8.. Reason is appx 18 zigbee sengled contact sensors did not like my C8 [not pro] for whatever reason. C7 is on channel 15 and the C8 is on 25.

Yeah, I guess we are living in the same world where some of our Zigbee just do not like the C8/C8pro. No very good reason and Hubitat staff was really excellent and looked carefully into my Zigbee issues, and just nothing obvious ever came up.

I had to basically re-pair all the zigbee devices, they wouldn't even show up in the topology, once I did that, they respond like before. very strange, the restore said successful.
I am using channel 11 and bumped the power to the max. i'll try with 15 if it fails again.
is there a document on how to bring the C7 back as a relay/slave? for now I don't want to add any devices to it unless they start having issues.

thanks for your help,

Sam

Awesome, thanks!

How did you get ahold of Hubitat? I have sent them two messages a week apart with no response....

This cannot be done. The hub is a zigbee coordinator, and a primary zwave controller.

It cannot be configured as a zigbee/zwave router/repeater.

Also, repeaters are protocol specific. So a LoRa repeater wonโ€™t repeat zigbee (or zwave).

It sounds like you possibly restored a LOCAL Hubitat Backup file from your computer...??? If so, that would explain why the Zigbee devices did not work until they were re-paired with the new C8-Pro hub.

To perform a Hub Migration, one must create a Migration Cloud Backup, which includes the Zigbee and Z-Wave radio configurations. After restoring this type of backup, all Zigbee and Z-Wave devices should 'just work' without needing manual intervention. I successfully migrated from a C7 to C8 to C8-Pro hubs over the years without any issues.

Please read the official documentation regarding Hub Migration as it also has a "What do I do with my old hub" section.

It's been a while but I think the add old C7 went something like...

Don't delete anything from your C8.
Reset and pair your device to your C7 with a new name.
Enable Hub Mesh for the device on the C7 and then the C8.
On the C8, swap the newly named meshed device for the old name of the device.

If you then decide to go back you can re-pair the device to your C8 and re-swap the device (old for new).

More or less.

I did the cloud backup and restore and it said successful, the zigbee devices worked on and off, the ZWave worked 100%

Awesome, thanks

I did all those steps, my C7 is factory default now. what I couldn't find was a procedure to add it back to the mesh. thanks for the doc.

Put it on a differant zigbee channel than your other hub. After you pair some devices to it you use hub mesh in settings to share your devices with both hubs.

This is not possible because this post is accurate:

If you are trying to use the Hub Mesh feature, that is just a way to share devices (mostly events/commands from/to them -- not the only way you can do this but by far the easiest) to another hub on your LAN. It has nothing to do with the mesh networks themselves like the Zigbee and Z-Wave network on your new hub, and there is no way to join one hub to another's Zigbee or Z-Wave network. Hub Mesh is also completely agnostic as to the type of devices you use with it. Think of its name more as a metaphor, which I think was the intent.

To set that up, you need to go to Settings > Hub Mesh on each hub. The documentation you were pointed to before has more information. Here's that link again:
