Replace Failed Node Feature

Anyone successfully use the Replace Failed Node Feature? I have a device that no longer is functioning as was hoping to use this so I don't break all of my automations. For me it does not seem to want to learn a new device to replace the original.

When I try to use it, only on the first try it scans for another device to replace it. After that it fails and does not even let me try again, just says failed. I can add the new device with a regular include, but just not as a replace.

A workaround is to create a temp virtual device of the same type, iterate through all the “in use by” items listed at the end of the failed device, swap the virtual device for the broken device in your automations, remove the broken device, pair your new device, iterate through all the “in use by” items for the virtual device, swapping in the new device.

Yes I have successfully used the replace function a couple of times so it does/can work.
But yes not the best feedback either. The last time I used it it told me it failed but it really did work.

Also, if it fails once you can go back and refresh the zwave details page and try it again.

Yeah, same. When I did it, it took a little while and didn't give very good feedback, but did complete eventually. Once you put the device into inclusion mode, sit back and watch the hub logs; it might take a minute or two.

Its never worked for me :frowning:

I'm just starting to deploy my C7 after 6 months waiting... figuring the z-wave issues would be settled down, but no. Devices magically fail after working for days without issue.

I have a fan switch that is not working. wanted to use the Replace feature. When i click on the replace button i immediately get this message.

Any idea on how to use this feature? It would be nice if it works to prevent the 'virtual device' replace method on the more involved devices.

Is the old switch still powered up? If I remember correctly (and I may not be) replace will immediately fail if it can still contact the old device.

If not then try to shut down the hub and remove power for 30 seconds. Turn it back on and try again.

Update.

I was able to get the replace feature to work after clicking refresh and then repair. Once the repair process completed its run, the Replace feature allowed me to add the replacement device.

Wait... Stop the press. Scratch the above.

I just tried the same steps with another node and it DOES NOT work.

So still chasing the dream and the solution....

If i default the old device (this is a GE Jasco switch, so 3 up then 3 down, 5 blinks), the device then shows as unreachable in the rebuild phase.

Does not default ing the switch count as making the old device invisible?

i have tried about everything i can think of. REPLACE does not work, or works only when certain factors / conditions exist that are somewhat elusive.

REPLACE is a great idea. especially if you have a device that has references in many apps, RM, and dashboards.

Just wish it would work...

Update:
REPLACE feature suddenly allowed me to replace the three devices i had pending. I do not know what changed. I let the process go idle for about an hour then tried again and it worked.

I have noticed that when adding the device that is the replacement i get the check box prompt for security. If i clear these, they repopulate within 2 seconds. I have managed to clear and hit OK quickly, and it does appear that the devies have been REPLACED w/o S2 security.

It would be nice to know why these are repopulating the security check box.
It would also be nice to understand what is happening behind the scene with the REPLACE feature. Anyone assist in explaining this process and my experience with it?

Update:
It appears that the replace tool will not execute if there are device messages pending? I shutdown the HE and actually powered off the house (not just the target). Once the HE was restarted, i turned power back on, clicked refresh on the target device on the z Wave settings, and the replace feature worked like a charm.

I’m not having any luck.

I had a Leviton Smart 3-pronged Smart (Leviton DZPA1) plug all of a sudden stop responding in Hubitat. I am not able to use the Replace feature. I’ve been able to exclude it using both the HE and another Z-wave controller I don’t use. But the Replace feature will always fail out. I can include and exclude the device from the other controller just fine.

If I add this device as a new device and use the swap device feature, the old device ends up as a ghost device and can never be removed from the Z-wave details page.
