I'm using the Zooz Zen17 for the fireplace and it's working great but the naming of the child composite device sux. I can't tell Alexa to "turn on the fireplace" anymore because of the device name. Anyone have a better way to fix this other than creating a virtual switch?
You should be able to change the label. Are you not able to do that?

You can change the names in Hubitat, and also in Alexa you can change it to something entirely different if you wish.
In Hubitat, the device "label" is usually what's seen in menus, rules, etc. The "name" is a different field and, in my opinion, less useful and more confusing. See example below...
