My use case is how to wire in a relay to a Rennai direct wall gas heater allowing for remote HE management. I understand this is a rather amorphous inquiry. Just exploring the past attempts and results.
Do you have a link to a manual? If the unit will accept a standard thermostat, your best bet might be a zigbee or zwave thermostat. An older centralite pearl, perhaps. $20 on ebay. Search for "CentraLite HA 3156105."
Thank you for the ideas. Got the manual, but in those days they were not cognizant of smart. My interest is how to hardwire a zwave relay into this type of device. I know it is simple yet am lacking the expertise to do it correctly and safely.
Any chance you can find a link to an online copy of the manual, post a screenshot of the wiring diagram, or give the model number of the unit?
If it is similar to a new model, there is an input for a remote "wall thermostat." A thermostat is really just a temperature controlled relay, so any relay connected across the inputs should do the trick. See page 35 of the manual linked below for what is provided on the new models available at US retailers. Note that you also have to enable this mode via the onboard controls (again, for a new model).
My older unit does not have the remote thermostat feature, which would be very nice to have. What I really want is on/off control because the unit would not come back on after a power outage. It is a seasonal home at the lake and after adding a well and insulation, it’s become nice to occasionally work from camp year round…so can’t drain the pipes. The minimum temp it gets to is 55. It would great to turn it off during a warm spell $$$ and on when traveling to there. Thanks for all the insights. I’ll need chase down the full circuit diagrams which doesn’t seem easy.
Just one more thought...if the unit has a removeable service panel, there may be a wiring diagram located on the inside cover.
Good Luck!
