Looking for a wall outlet (not a plug) that is Z-Wave, does not require a neutral, and has power reporting for each outlet. Zooz has nothing.
These will be monitoring a washing machine and a gas dryer.
I am currently using 2 ZEN 15s and want to use those for another purpose. The outlet they plug into has a loose internal connection so it needs to be replaced anyway.
Wall outlets have 3 connections, Line, Neutral and ground:
The larger slot is Neutral. There's no circuit without a neutral. In-wall switches and dimmers can be no-neutral because the neutral is already connected to the other side of the load.
Aside from the neutral issue, I don't think you're going to find what you are looking for. As i recall NEC requires 1 outlet in a duplex socket to be "always on".
I'd guess, but dont know for sure, that power monitoring would likely only be implemented on the controlled outlet.
If you have space, replacing the wall box with a 2 gang and using two smart outlets could be an option. Jasco/GE or the Legrands might be an option, although the Legrand is Zigbee, while Jasco offers both types of Z.
Ok. How about using 2 plugs similar to the ZEN15 but in a smaller form factor that report power? Was searching on Amazon and found a few but not sure if they are supported.
The Aeotec Smart Switch 7 (z-wave 700-series) can handle up to 1800w and has a lot of power-reporting customization options. I got a couple when they first came out, and they've been nothing but stellar. It's a well-made device.
But they ain't cheap these days -- brace yourself for some major sticker shock if you look them up!
ETA - on the off chance you can stomach the price, be sure the SS7 is compatible with your large-appliance startup/motor loads in particular. That's where a Zen15 really shines.
They don't seem to be available any more and the 7 is expensive still. But they do look like they'd fit in a duplex outlet, without the need for the adapter I'm using.
The year after we moved into this house in 1983, I ripped out the ‘walls’ the previous owner built in the basement (made from 1x2s and Liquid Nails) so all that was left was one huge room with the HVAC and water heater in the middle. Ran new electric and Ethernet to every room. The outlet in the laundry room was installed then, so it lasted over 40 years. When I removed the outlet, the price tag indicated I paid 79 cents for a standard Leviton outlet.
Went to Ace hardware the other day and bought one for 99 cents for a standard Leviton outlet.
I used paneling because I can’t mud worth $hit. Finally ripping out the plush carpeting in an upstairs bedroom. It was installed in 1982.
