Recall of Govee Heaters

This is a repost of a comment I just left on the Govee Integration Thread:
This is a public service announcement.

The Govee Heaters have been recalled. I've had a 7135 since last December that worked great with this integration. But I got a recall notice via Amazon and just applied for a refund from the Govee site. Apparently their heaters have caused a reported 113 fires. Testing determined the smart electric space heaters do not comply with the voluntary industry safety standard, UL 1278, posing an overheating and fire risk from wireless control features.

Are these heaters labeled with a UL mark?

Interesting question. I just looked all over it and could not find a UL mark/sticker.

ETL mark?

I have the H7132 model. It appears to have no UL sticker but it does have an ETL logo on the back side, on the silver sticker on the top right of that sticker.

Honestly, this is a bummer as I really used and liked that heater. Met all of my needs. I noticed Govee doesn't list the heaters for sale any longer on their website now too. Hopefully they choose to correct whatever is wrong and released "fixed" versions but my hopes aren't high.

I suppose if it doesn’t have a UL mark, I wouldn’t expect it to meet a UL standard.

That’s why I found the text I quoted from that CPSC advisory to be intriguing.

If it does claim to meet UL standards but doesn’t, that seems like a whole other can of worms…

If it had an ETL marking but couldn’t meet (I assume) a related UL standard, would you trust Govee in the future even if they did release a “fixed” version?

If I boycotted every company that ever had a recall then I'd own very very little. It's reasonable to have them pursue this "Voluntary" recall, correct their mistake, and release a corrected product.

I suspect the space heater market is a challenging one given the horror stories from things that are likely both a company's fault and the fault of improper intended use of it by the consumer. I am fully expecting this to scare Govee out of that space altogether.

I agree, mistakes happen and responsible companies issue recalls.

But I was under the impression ETL and UL labels indicate a product was independently tested by a nationally recognized testing lab in North America.

So that’s what would concern me about plugging in a Govee product in the future.

Was it independently tested to earn the safety labels the manufacturer puts on the device? Was it tested in-house only? Was it tested at all?

But maybe I have misunderstood what it means to have an ETL or UL marking on a consumer product.
