Question on Kasa Matter Dimmer pairing

Does anyone know for sure, if you connect a Kasa Matter device to the Wifi via the Kasa app originally, can you then just use the QR code to also add it to Matter? Specifically this was a KS225 Matter Dimmer. Alexa app just kept saying it could not find the device. Does it need to be reset to add via Matter?

For background I have two Tapo bulbs I can access via the Tapo app and also they are paired to HomeKit / Hubitat via Matter but I forget if I did the Matter pairing on Apple first or the mobile app first. I am not even sure if it makes a difference.

The Dimmer I am trying to help someone else, and they added it to the Kasa app and Alexa first, also just got the Tapo app which they can see it from there as well. Matter does not seem to want to pair to Alexa though.

Yes. Kasa and Tapo devices need to be added via Matter first before adding them to the app. If it goes to the app first, the expectation is to use the Alexa skill to add and control the device. The dimmer should be factory reset and added via Matter.

I must have added mine to Apple with Matter first then.

So once you pair it via Matter (over Wifi), then I assume the app just finds it on the LAN? Its still good to have the app for firmware updates if needed.

Makes sense, I will have them reset and try to pair it right to Alexa or Hubitat.

I found a great trick for pairing Kasa Matter (over wifi) devices to Hubitat Elevation this evening, I put in two KS205 smart switches.

  1. power cycle or reset the device. It will be in pairing mode, blinking

  2. Use the Kasa mobile app to connect to the device. Update the firmware, Give the device your wi-fi credentials.

  3. STOP - The Device will connect to your LAN while remaining in Pairing Mode

  4. Go to your hub, add device, and use the 11 digit matter setup code. The hub will connect and pair!

  5. Go back to Kasa app and finish setting up the device, some settings aren't available in Hubitat (ie, the LED tuning on/off with the light)

If you finish setup in the Kasa app, the device drops out of pairing mode, and I don't know how to put it back in without either another smart home hub, or resetting (which loses the LAN credentials). Using this small window during initial setup worked reliably for me.
